This is a distrubing sequence that flew under the radar on Sunday — clock running near end of Q3, less time on game clock than play clock, so taking it to the EOQ is fine. Texans clearly, though, wanna run a play. Fine. What’s NOT fine — (1) the play is VERY late getting called and (2) CJ and the offense seem to have zero clue the quarter is ending. Please tell me I’m off base here, I’d love to be wrong.

TJ Houshmandzadeh on the Texans offense: “All they gotta do is not lose the game on offense, and CJ knows that. Can the coordinator & CJ get on the same page? There has to be some type of disconnect w/ the play calling & what CJ wants to do.” On NE game: “As a coach, we know if we don’t turn the ball over, we win this game. We running the ball 50 times. If your calling plays, once you have 1 or 2 turnovers, we just gunna run the ball & throw screens.”

Texas A&M HC Mike Elko - Building Defensive IQ for Winning Situational Football "It starts to me with you have to develop football 101 in your defense. You've got to take a step back & you've got to build some level of general football knowledge in your defensive unit. It's sometimes the things that can save you when you don't call the perfect defense/scheme. Down & Distance Understanding... 2nd & 7+ - We have won 1st down... The offense is now trying to get themselves back in favorable positions for 3rd down. Here the battle is for half the yardage. - Offensively you will see a lot of RPOs, Quick Game, Screen & Draw. This is not a down where you will see a lot of high risk types of offensive plays. - Defensively we play this down & distance like a 3rd down off 1/2 the yardage... (2nd & 8 is like 3rd & 4, 2nd & 14 is like 3rd & 7) 2nd & 4-6 - We have lost 1st down. Now we must make a play on 2nd down to try to re-create an advantage for 3rd down. Success on this down is similar to 1st & 10. We are looking to hold them to 3 or less. - This is a down where the offense usually sticks to their strengths. Again, they are looking for a low risk play that will keep the chains moving forward. - For us we call this D&D no different than 1st down. 2nd & 1-3 (Waste) - Thus for the offense is known as a waste down. This is a D&D where the offense is likely to take a deep shot because they are in a favorable position for 3rd down. - Offenses will try double moves & max protection shot plays a lot on this D&D - For us on defense, this is a big zone pressure down. Gives us a chance to create a negative play and regain the advantage on the sticks. Also closes the middle of the field to protect us on the shot plays.

Steve Nash on the difference between Miami closing games last year with Jimmy Butler vs this season with the new offense Nash: I think for Miami, they had a focal point in Jimmy Butler. You can run the game through him at the end of games. Now they have a bunch of guys who can take turns in a sense. I think what Spo has done with this offense has been brilliant. Where this offense is great to me is using the full court, spacing out so guys can attack from beyond half court... When the game slows down, its difficult to play a full court game where your spreading the floor just going 1 on 1. Teams are going to load up. The idea of being this equal opportunity offense where you have multiple players who can get it done sounds great but at the end of the game its gotta be simplicity and clarity Wade: It sound good. WR Equanimeous St. Brown was briefly with the 49ers during training camp this year had this to say about Kyle Shanahan: “Everyone wants to talk about the injuries and stuff, but in my short time there on offense, I realized real quick that Kyle Shanahan is a mastermind. I’m not gonna say he draws plays creatively, but he will purposely scheme people open to the extent, we all know defenses have rules, there’s too many offensive plays for defenses to know every play so they have rules they go by. So he’ll figure out their rules, and use that to his advantage. And he does it so well that you are wondering why they are winning with injuries on offense and scoring so many points, it’s because he knows how to scheme guys open.”

This is a great example of using analytics to inform your principles of play. As you can see, the longer it is in the shot clock, the lower the field goal percentage. As a coach, you have to ask yourself, “How do I slow the other team down?” And one of the ways you can do this is by tagging up on a shot attempt. Tagging up: offensive players will crash the glass by “tagging” the player closest to them. This allows the offense, which is going to defense, to match up already. This slows down transition offenses by “choking” the ball and making it more difficult for players to throw outlet passes. It will also slow the other team’s offense down if they rely on one player to initiate their offense. 🎥/🎬: NBA

Gasparino: You do have to ask yourself why the rush to get a deal like this done.. They didn’t agree to that much for us. Why did they go from DEFCON 1 to this? One reason is that there is a federal appeals court that is ruling on Trump’s use of the emergency power to impose tariffs and that court could rule against him. If it rules against him, the whole tariff scheme is up in the air
