Anthropic quietly added a feature in the Claude Code desktop app that most people don't know about. Now you do. Split panes indefinitely with a simple drag and drop. 🔥

My brother is so codexy that he’s finding features Claude added months ago 😅. Also, their desktop app is so crap. You won’t stay there more than an hour once you’ve experienced the Codex app.

I didn't say I just found out about it. Most people I know don't know about it though that's why I'm sharing it. I've known about it since the first day it came out 🫡

This one is a lot better:

It's a great feature indeed. has it also, but with a complex algorithm to ensure you never end up with those "teeny-tiny" panes that plague a lot of tiling WMs.

@amorriscode ?? this was added months ago, and i’m 99% sure it was a typical feature rollout with a video and all.

logic tom's profile picture
logic tom2 months ago

@amorriscode um just affirming that it wasn’t a quiet feature and was a typical rollout??

am.will's profile picture
am.will2 months ago

@amorriscode oh really? find me the post then from the @AnthropicAI or @ClaudeDevs account, since it wasn't quiet. i'll wait.

@amorriscode @AnthropicAI @ClaudeDevs let me save you some time, this came out june 26th, about 6 weeks ago.

@amorriscode @AnthropicAI @ClaudeDevs Yeah you resort to insults because your argument is completely invalid. Otherwise you'd be posting the proof. Oops 🤫

can we have those features on Codex and Chatgpt work as well? @thsottiaux @gdb @sama

Split panes turn the desktop app into an actual multi agent workspace instead of a single chat.

Nice, but I still prefer tiling window managers for true multitasking. Dragging feels slower than keyboard shortcuts.

am.will's profile picture
am.will2 months ago

I think there might be a shortcut. I swear there's another way

I found codex’s pop up window to be the better UX tho

am.will's profile picture
am.will2 months ago

Anthropic has that as well by the way that's a totally different type of feature

Axi's profile picture
Axi2 months ago

Guess I am saying it because I haven’t found a use case to split/stack so many small chat windows.

This is the kind of feature that quietly changes how you actually work with Claude Code.

Didn't know that one, trying it tonight. Feels like half the good Claude Code features never make the release notes.

still shocked how long it took them to ship something this basic

Future Systems's profile picture

Infinite split panes solve visibility and can create a new failure: nobody knows which pane owns the task. I would name each pane by repo, branch and objective, then show the last write and test result in its header. More parallel work is only helpful when a stale pane cannot quietly ship.

This must be for people that don’t know what is a tiling window manager.

am.will's profile picture
am.will2 months ago

I use tilers but this is far cleaner

Vitali Arbuzov's profile picture
Vitali Arbuzov2 months ago

It’s not cleaner if you have to use your mouse.

am.will's profile picture
am.will2 months ago

It is in my opinion because then you would need to have a bunch of different claude windows open which is problematic

am.will's profile picture
am.will2 months ago

Also how exactly would you select the exact chat that you want without your mouse?

Vitali Arbuzov's profile picture
Vitali Arbuzov2 months ago

I use i3wm on Linux, named workspaces (up to 10) for each session (usually 2-3 panels each, for implementation/design/review), vim style hotkeys to move between the windows, exact hotkeys to jump right to each workspace.

am.will's profile picture
am.will2 months ago

And u call that cleaner than dragging the mouse for . 2 seconds. BLASPHEMY 😂 To each his own. Haha But I genuinely don't want to run more than one instance per account. That's too much for me I do love tilers though. With 57" they are necessary

Nice hidden gem. Drag and drop tiling makes it feel more like a real IDE rather than a single chat window. Keep the workspace tiled, keep the context alive
