Anthropic was so bottleneck'd by GitHub that they rebuilt git itself. This might seem insane, but a lot of us are gonna end up where they are today.

So they invented working on the main with ftp?

The irony is for a while we thought we'd never create a version control system beyond git because... "All the agents already know git, and 98% of devs use it, why would things change?"

Do you think they will release the in-house source control publicly, or is it too tied to how they run their agents?

五个月从每天合并2500涨到3万多,git顶不住也正常,这增速挺离谱的。没想到agent写代码最先崩的是版本控制啊

how long did it take them to build it, was it a side project or a whole team

Nah, their own post says Scion isn't a general git replacement. You'd need 30K merges a day to care.

github and asana are the two i can’t let go yet the rest of them i just subbed for my own versions and never looked back

The hell do you think google did ?

google and meta both ended up on their own source control (piper, sapling) after outgrowing the off the shelf stuff, it just took them years of humans committing. agents get you there in months

I've watched CI queues melt when one agent farm gets loud. Anthropic going from 2.5k to 30k merges a day and rebuilding git is what that wall looks like at the extreme. Human-scale source control was never built for a swarm that never sleeps. Do most teams hit this first on the forge, or on the review queue?

git used to be history for humans. with agents it's also the undo button. which is why mine still can't push without asking

yeah rebuilding git to unblock ai feels wild but totally believable when you're hitting those walls. what actually changed in their workflow once they had their own version

Built my own version control system called Operand. Not file based like git, but event/schema based branching and merging. Super different, and built for visual-first software building (instead of code-first.. like today):

Anthropic's own numbers say it: 2,500 merges a day in May, 30,000+ by September. Most teams will hit the human review wall long before git breaks. Fix that queue first.

30,000 merges a day and every one of them still says "fix tests" in the commit message lol

There's another benefit here: Scion could give Anthropic a continuous pipeline of structured training data. Agent-generated code changes, their context, and their outcomes could be organized into training examples. That's potentially far more valuable than raw source code.

Their own numbers explain it: ~2,500 merged changes a day in May, 30,000+ in September, about 12x in four months. Most teams won't rebuild git, but merge queues, CI minutes and review capacity hit that wall first. Worth measuring PRs merged per week now, before it bites.

The number that matters: about 2,500 merges a day in May, 30,000+ in September. That's 12x in four months, and git just broke the loudest. Code review and CI run on the same human clock, so for most repos those walls arrive before git does.

2500 to 30000 merges a day. at what point do you just admit the bottleneck was the humans reading them

Profilbild von Zen

30,000 merges a day is a different scale. Most teams still treat git as fine until the agent volume gets high. Have you seen any other companies hit the same limit, or is Anthropic still early?

for most teams id bet ci and review queues choke way before git itself does

Status and checkout over a very large tree is where I would expect it to start hurting. Which operation hit them first?

Profilbild von Mohammad Vazin

The number that matters is 2,500 to 30,000 merges a day. Git was fine; review queues, CI and merge conflicts were built for humans opening a few PRs each. Most teams will hit this wall in their CI bill and review backlog long before they need a new VCS.

not sure a lot of us end up there when they say themselves it's not a general git replacement and aren't releasing it. the part people can actually copy is testing after merge instead of gating before

the things they could build on top of Scion will be crazy good - entire enterprise can be managed with this monorepo view and can provide significant efficencies, and maybe speedup training pipelines, inference and even overall the product strategy too
