The WalMart closest to me has been like that for several years now. Super dystopian place to be between the solar panel covered parking lot full of homeless people, all the inventory being under lock and key and the further walled off areas within the store. I don’t shop there anymore.

The telling cultural demographic is the black hair care products get locked up first. When RFID anti-theft tags first were in use, like 20 years ago, it was shameful to see them on all the hair care items. Our local Walmart had to first lockup all the LED lights in the automotive section, I guess bling is stolen too. At some point stores will just stop selling what gets stolen, which does result in 'we'll sell nothing by closing the store altogether and GTFO.'
