( #appleinternal ) Before the release of the iPhone 17 series, Apple would send out 17 Pros in decoy boxes to employees that pictured an iPhone with an iPad Pro camera bump and no Apple logo. Reminiscent of the PROTO1 iPhone 16 design. This is at the PRB stage.

Packaging the 17 Pro and accessories into the decoy boxes

That image looks so fake. Almost looks like newer Xiaomis. In the end actual leaks seemed stronger than their “prevention”.

It likely may not have been to spread a fake image of the next iPhone, but instead prevent people from realizing that inside were the next generation iPhone 17 Pros while they were being sent out to people.

I did not realize that much effort was put into ensuring the packaging was absolutely pristine. Do they only do this since they were sent to Apple employees? Or also for mass production?

So they just leave these weird decoys around for fun now?

The decoy boxes are to hide the actual phone inside as far as I can tell. These are of the PRB stage so they would likely be sent out for external testing. The previous instances seen in public were the PRB iPhone 8s, which had the normal phone on the box.
