Here is the clip and transcript for Johann answering why Robinhood chose to build its own Ethereum L2: "You see a lot of companies right now building their own L1. And for us, we felt excited about this idea where we can control anything that we want to build and we don't have to deal with any other chain to talk to or anything like that. But at the same time, creating the security of a real proper decentralized chain is extremely difficult, as you know. And we basically get that for free with Ethereum. The network has been going on for a very long time now and the security is stable and it's decentralized. And I think that's really the key two points that we wanted to have. When you look at some of these new L1s that are being created, it's not really decentralized and it's not really secure. So at the end of the day, you're basically having like a... fancy database that is probably a bit slower to use than an actual database. And so we didn't really see the value in that. With Ethereum, we get the security by default. The second thing that we get by having an L2 is that you get all this liquidity that is already part of all the EVM compatible chains. And that was also a very important decision factor for us. If we really want to bring the stock market onto the chain, we need to have this liquidity. It's not going to be possible if it's in a closed loop or in a closed chain that nobody can access and you need to have like 20 different hoops before you can bridge to that chain. So for us, that was kind of the two elements that we really wanted to focus on and that's why we decided on building on Ethereum. And then we decided on Arbitrum mostly because we love the technology. There's a few things that we are excited about. For example, Stylus. It's a way that we can basically use different language into the chain and we can build on top of that. We also like the way that they prioritize transactions that is, we think, a better way than some of the competition. And so basically we'll use the Arbitrum stack and we'll create our own L2, which will make us also compatible with all the Arbitrum chains. And so we think it's kind of the best of all the worlds. But for us, the idea is like we will start with public stock, and then we think that we can tokenize anything really, not just stocks. It can be private stock, it can be art, it can be real estate, whatever you want to think of. And so we really wanted to have a platform that is kind of easy to build on and we can keep adding on it. At the same time, we know that regulation are going to be hard on some of these products, especially when it comes to financial products. You always have different regulators. You have different rules depending on the region. If you're in the EU versus the US versus LATAM. And so we felt like we wanted to have our own layer that we could customize for these needs. And then anyone that is building on the chain will also be able to benefit from what we are building, versus just putting everything in a contract that will be just good for the people that are using the Robinhood contracts. But so at this point, we announced the chain in June. We are in private test right now, and then we'll do more announcements in the future." Marc Andreessen on the 3 things he looks for when investing in a startup The first thing Marc Andreesen looks for is a big market: “Is there a big existing market that you think you can go after and displace incumbents? Or do you believe there will be a new market that will be big?” The second thing he looks for is a 10x better product: “Is there a fundamental technology or economic change that justifies a new company? And the way I always think about that is: Is there a 10x change happening in the technology landscape? Is something 10x faster, 10x cheaper, or 10x better? If it’s not 10x, we as both VCs and entrepreneurs have to ask ourselves if it’s really worth doing because it’s really hard to start new companies . . . Existing companies are usually pretty good at what they do. So for a new company to exist, it has to bring a product to market that’s so much better than what exists that it punches through the status quo.” The third is the team: “Is the team outstanding? . . . You want to have a founding team of complementary skillsets. You want to have at least one super strong technologist — quite possibly more than one. Some of the best startups are actually more than one founding technologist. And then it often helps to have someone who is a marketing or salesperson who has a really good understanding of business.” Marc believes that you need all three of these, but if you’re going to compromise on one of those as an investor, it should be the product: “A great market is a lot easier to make up for with iterative product execution. The problem with a poor or small market is that even if you do a good job on the product, there just aren’t that many customers so it’s hard to ever get big and people get demoralized . . . And then we evaluate the team of a startup by its ability to get into a big market with a good product.”

Mark Zuckerberg on why he prefers to recruit people directly out of college In this interview from 2005, a 21-year-old Mark Zuckerberg is asked what he looks for in a new hire. There’s two things, he says. “Number one is raw intelligence. You can hire someone who has been doing software engineering for 10 years, and if they’ve been doing it for 10 years, that’s probably what they’ll be doing for the rest of their life. That’s cool — there are some things that that person can do and they’re definitely useful in an organization and can do a lot of stuff. But if you find someone whose raw intelligence exceeds theirs but has 10 years less experience, they can probably adapt and learn way quicker. Within a very short amount of time they’ll be able to do a lot of things that [the person with 10 years of experience] will never be able to do. So that’s the most important thing that I look for.” The second thing he looks for is alignment with what the company is trying to do: “People can be really smart or have skills that are directly applicable, but if they don’t really believe in it, then they’re not going to work hard or care enough to develop the relevant experience in order to succeed. The best people I’ve hired so far have been people who didn’t really have that much engineering experience. I hired a couple of electric engineers out of Stanford to do programming stuff, and they had very little programming experience going in, but they were really smart and really willing to go at it. The guy who just wrote photos was one of those guys, and if you’re willing to just do whatever it takes to get photos out, then you’re probably more valuable than someone who is just a career software engineer.” He concludes: “Those are the things I’m looking for and why I would rather recruit people out of college.” Video source: Stanford eCorner (2005)

Qasar Younis was COO of Y Combinator when Sam Altman was its president. Peter Ludwig was an early engineer on Android Automotive at Google. Both are Detroit guys with family roots at General Motors. In 2017, they started Applied Intuition to make a billion machines intelligent. Putting intelligence into a machine is one of the hardest problems in technology. A car, a tractor, and a mining vehicle each have different hardware, different sensors, and lives on the line if the software fails. So instead of building one machine, they built the technology that goes into all of them. Cars, trucks, defense vehicles, mining equipment, combines, robots. Like Nvidia sells chips into everyone else's machines, Applied Intuition sells intelligence. They are the only company in the world that does this across all of these industries. They have raised about a billion dollars. They have never spent any of it. Qasar believes that when we look back 25 years from now, the most important companies in the world will all be physical AI companies. Marc Andreessen explains the 3 Necessities for Start-up Success: "The general criteria for a successful high-tech startup, in my view, you see different sort of rules of thumb from different people. But the three big things you always come back to are, is there a big market? And by the way, that comes in two parts. Is there a big existing market that you think you can go after and sort of displace incumbents or do you believe there will be a new market that will be big? So big market. Is there a fundamental technology or economic change that causes you to basically justify having a new company? And that's really important. And the way I always think about that is, is there a 10X change happening in the technology landscape? Is something 10X faster or 10X cheaper or 10X better? And if it's not 10X, we as both VCs and entrepreneurs, we really have to ask ourselves like, is it really worth doing? Because it's really hard. I mean, it's really hard to start new companies. new companies generally shouldn't exist. Existing companies are usually pretty good at what they do. And so for a new company to exist, it not only has to like come in and go into business and bring a product to market, but it has to bring a product to market that's so much better than what already exists that it punches through the sort of status quo. And most customers in most markets are pretty happy buying from the current suppliers and so there has to be a real kind of edge on the thing and we look for that in either a technology change, usually a technology change or an economic change. which are often the same thing. And then the third is team. Is the team outstanding? And if you think about this as an entrepreneur, it becomes a question of the founding team. Some companies are solo founders and they can work, but generally most of us, like myself, we're human beings, we're mortal. You want to have a founding team of complementary skill sets. And so you want to have at least one super strong technologist, quite possibly more than one. Some of the best startups are actually more than one founding technologist and then it often helps to have somebody who's like a product or who's a market or sales person or has a sort of really good understanding of business on the team, certainly helps a lot. And so we sort of look at market, product, and team. And the reality is you need all three. I would say, interestingly, if you're going to compromise as an investor, if we're going to compromise on one of those, it would actually be the product. And the reason I say that is because a great market is a lot easier to make up for with iterative product execution than a poor market. Because the problem with a poor market, a small market, is even if you do a great job on the product, there just aren't that many customers. It's hard to ever get big."

Elon Musk on Grok: “I think an AI that is sort of SpaceX’s baby will be a very good AI. I think SpaceX is a collection of some of the very best humans on Earth, both in capability and morality and goodness, and I think we want to have an AI that is born of that capability and that morality and that goodness. I think that’s very, very important. So I’d like to encourage people to help out, actually, with the AI hardware on the ground and the AI software and, of course, with the AI satellites. Solar is going to be a very important part of that. The TerraFab will be a very important part of that, but we must also succeed on the software front, and we’re going to be training Grok on the sum total of all SpaceX information. So in a way, it will be trained on you. You will effectively be the parents of the AI. It will inherit your thoughts and ideas and beliefs, and I think that’s a good thing. So, yeah, we’ve got to win here on the AI hardware and the AI software. That maybe is the most important message. I think that is actually the most important message I wanted to convey today is that we must win on AI because the future is overwhelmingly AI and robots. So we won’t ultimately be able to control the AI. It’ll be too smart for that. But just like if you have a child that is a super genius child, you can still instill in that child the values and beliefs that you think are good and right. And so that’s why it’s incredibly important that we succeed with Grok. So, yeah, well, Grok 4.5 you’ve tried probably. We’ve got 4.6 coming out in about a week. And then 4.7 should be really pretty special. So I’d like to encourage everyone at SpaceX to use AI and to make it better.”

I got to ask Jensen a question today at CES 2026. Question: What advice would you give to a new robotics founder for them to choose the right application space or the right idea so that they can have the most impact and most differentiation? Jensen's answer (short summary): The real strategic choice is between a horizontal play and a vertical one. Horizontal competition comes from every direction, but focusing on a specific vertical allows you to solve the hardest problems for a specific industry. Whether it’s EMS manufacturing or surgical robotics, that deep domain expertise is very beneficial. Jensen's full answer: Well, first of all, let's take a step back. As you know, NVIDIA, here we were just talking about AI factories. And that AI factory—our contribution, our chips, systems, infrastructure, which is software, and model technology. Is that right? That's kind of the NVIDIA stack. And that's an AI factory. In order to build robotic systems, you really need three different computers. You need the training computer, which I just described. And then you need another computer for doing simulation, because the robot needs to learn how to practice and be evaluated inside a virtual world that's physically precise, so that it doesn't have to do crazy stuff in the physical world while it's still learning. And so we create a virtual world that obeys the laws of physics, and I've demonstrated it several times, and that virtual world is called Omniverse. And so that's a second computer. And that computer is much more like one of our gaming computers, and the GPU that we use for that is RTX Pro. Basically an RTX. And then the third computer is the computer that goes into the robot. It's the robot brain. And that robot computer we call Orin today, and then the next generation is called Thor. And it has its own stack. So Thor has a super-fast inference stack. It runs a safety operating system, like the safety operating system we have in the car, because you want the robot to stay in its guardrails and not do things that it's not confident in doing. And so, you have your stack, and then you have your model. And the model could be fine articulation, manipulation, and locomotion, and each one of those, it could be system one and system two thinking. The technology necessary to build a robot is incredible. And so I just described for you, in order to be a robotics company, you have to have three computers. You have to understand all three stacks, and you have to build this robotic system, not to mention all the electronics and the mechanicals necessary to do it. It's incredibly hard. However, as you know, these pieces of technology independently have been coming together. Isn't that right? Which is really what happens to a new industry, is when there's enabling technology necessary for the industry itself, but it rides on the contributions of the technology advances in other industry that it doesn't have to worry about. And so the humanoid industry is riding on the work of the AI factories we're building for other mainstream stuff and other AI stuff. And our Omniverse was designed for other applications and different other digital twin capabilities. And so all this stuff is now coming together. The question is for robotics, ultimately, it comes down to a couple of different questions. Do you want to be a horizontal company, or do you want to be a vertically domain-specific company? The benefit of a horizontal company, of course, is that you less worry about the application, you more worry about the technology, and if you succeed, your scale can be quite large. However, horizontal plays are incredibly hard. Your competition comes from every single direction. Now, on domain, if you want to be domain-specific, then you're going to have to understand the particular application quite deeply. So maybe it's something to do with EMS manufacturing, assembly of these AI supercomputers. Maybe it's related to building cars in factories. Whatever the reasons are, your domain expertise—could be surgical robots—domain expertise could really be a benefit. My preference usually—and you asked, so I'll offer—my preference tends to be to go find verticals, but that's kind of my preference. Some companies, some leaders just would prefer to build horizontal capability, and that's fine, too.
