Dear Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways, Sir, as we applaud the progress being made on our major roads, may I respectfully draw your attention to a problem that may be undermining some of that investment. When the rains come, the unpaved roads connecting to our newly paved roads become channels for sand and silt, washing directly into the drains along the main roads. The result? Drains become clogged, water finds its way onto the roads, flooding increases, and eventually the very roads we have invested so much in begin to suffer. It is a simple but important lesson: a paved main road cannot truly be protected if the roads feeding into it remain unpaved. Hon. Minister, perhaps the conversation should therefore move beyond paving the main corridors to completing the connecting roads as part of one integrated road network. Paving these connecting roads will not only improve mobility for residents; it will also reduce erosion and siltation, protect our drainage systems, minimize flooding, and significantly extend the lifespan of our paved roads. Sir, if we want our roads to last, we must address the entire network—not just the road we see, but also the roads that feed into it. Respectfully, Hon. Minister, we believe this is an issue worth your attention. Let’s build roads that do not only serve us today, but remain strong for generations to come.

Yesterday we took delivery of a variety of new Caterpillar machinery and New Holland tractors for our Works Department. These have been bought by the City of Bulawayo using money supplied to us by Zinara. I am delighted that we have bought top of the range equipment which will add massive capacity to our road maintenance and construction teams. We have serious challenges as we rehabilitate Bulawayo’s roads but this is a step in the right direction.
