The event was caused by two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, which occurred just seconds apart, resulting in extensive damage in several areas, particularly in the coastal state of La Guaira and areas near the capital, Caracas. Numerous buildings collapsed. Numerous buildings collapsed, and there were many fatalities and injuries, with many more still missing.
