Arabs are increasingly, and surprisingly, studying and learning about Somaliland more objectively, while expressing its history and political context with greater accuracy and fairness. I have rarely seen Arab media provide such a balanced discussion of Somaliland as this episode by Mustafa Guri, a Sudanese YouTuber on Alaraby Tube,...

For those unfamiliar with Somaliland’s history: Somaliland was legally recognized as an independent state on 26 June 1960. At that time, it was acknowledged by several countries and entered the international community as a sovereign entity. Only days later, Somaliland voluntarily united with Somalia, a union that was never properly ratified and ultimately collapsed. Following years of conflict and injustice, Somaliland reasserted its sovereignty in 1991, restoring the independence it had previously held. Since then, Somaliland has built its own government, maintained peace and security, and functioned as a stable, self-governing state for over three decades. This historical and legal record forms the foundation of Somaliland’s rightful claim to recognition today. #Somaliland

He affirms that more countries are recognising Somaliland and that the nation will take its seat among the community of nations — while calling on the Somaliland people to remain united, resilient and determined in the face of hostility. Embarrassment never ends with these people humiliating themselves on the world stage at every single opportunity. An Al Jazeera journalist asked Somalia’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Balcad, a very clear and direct question about Somaliland’s claims: that Somaliland is more developed, more stable, and has stronger democratic institutions, governance, and systems than Somalia. The question was simple: How do you respond to these claims? Instead of answering any of those points, the minister responded with this: “Somaliland is a British-colonised region consisting of three regions. Isaaq is a tribe in the middle, 40% of the population. The west and the east want Somalia. Somalia has 400 clans.” Not a single sentence addressed the actual question. No answer about: development, stability, democracy, institutions and governance Nothing. Regardless of your view on Somaliland, or whether a country is big or small, internally divided or cohesive, large in number or limited in size, or where it is located, the question was straightforward: 👉 Is Somaliland better than Somalia in these areas, or not? What the minister delivered instead was a baseless demographic rant that neither answers the question nor defends Somalia’s position. It only confused the journalist and embarrassed the audience. Worse, his response ignored reality and well-documented facts on the ground, exposing a clear incapacity to comprehend the political situation he is supposed to represent. Let’s correct a few false narratives he pushed: - “Somaliland is three regions” False. At no point under the British Protectorate, the Somali Republic, or Somaliland has Somaliland ever been a “three-region” entity. Historically and legally, Somaliland has always consisted of six districts inherited from the British, with full constitutional control over five, and partial presence in one Laascaanood district. - Demographics misrepresented. Isaaq communities exist in five out of the six districts, not “in the middle.” Somaliland exercises territorial control over more than 89% of its claimed territory, and Isaaq constitute well over 40% of the total population. But here’s the key point none of this was even asked. The question was not about tribes, not about clan arithmetic, and not about population distribution. The Somaliland case rests on legitimacy, history, inherited borders, and compliance with international norms, alongside the practical reality of a functioning state with elections, institutions, and governance all features of modern statehood. The journalist asked about state performance and governance. The minister replied with tribal talking points. That alone tells you everything. When a foreign minister cannot distinguish between statehood and clanism, between governance and genealogy, the embarrassment is not accidental it is structural. And unfortunately, it is broadcast live to the world.

Arabs are increasingly educating themselves about Somaliland and sharing key historical and political truths, as reported in the Scenarios program on Al Jazeera: - Somaliland holds the strategic key to the Horn of Africa and the Bab al-Mandab gateway. - It spans approximately 177,000 km², with a population of about 6 million people, made up of Isaaq, Darood, and Samaroon clans. - Somaliland gained independence in 1960 and was recognized by 33 countries before voluntarily uniting with Somalia. #SomalilandRecognition

A THREAD 1/2 The secessionist narrative that Somaliland was a state in 1960 is false — the historical record is clear. ———————————————— One of the most widely propagated yet concocted narratives promoted by secessionists in northern Somalia is the claim that two sovereign states— Somalia and Somaliland — were created in 1960, and that one of them was later “lost” or “given away.” This is false. Completely false. The historical record shows—clearly, repeatedly, and contemporaneously—that only one state was intended, negotiated, and established, and that state was the Somali Republic. From Hargeisa to Mogadishu, from London to New York (including the UN), the destination was stated consistently and explicitly: the creation of the Somali Republic on 1 July 1960. More importantly, the people and leaders of northern Somalia were active architects of the Somali Republic. Crucially, they neither intended nor worked toward the creation of a separate Somaliland state— despite the persistent misinformation now circulated by secessionist actors. So pervasive has this disinformation become that, only days ago, even unionist politicians in Mogadishu—some of whom hail from northern regions—repeated this claim as fact. What follows are nine hard proofs, drawn from primary documents and contemporaneous practice, demonstrating that no Somaliland state was created or “lost.” In 1960, everyone in Hargeisa was working toward the creation of one state: the Somali Republic. 1) Colonial labels were not states “British Somaliland,” “Italian Somaliland,” “French Somaliland,” the NFD, and the Ogaden were imperial administrative labels—not sovereign national projects. Across Somali territories in the late 1950s, the dominant political current was pan-Somali nationalism and decolonization, not fragmentation. 2) British Somaliland was a protectorate, not a state Under British law, Somaliland existed through protection treaties with Somali clans (1884–1886). Britain’s legal obligations were therefore to communities, not to a pre-existing sovereign “Somaliland state.” This mattered because protection could end only through a transition agreed by those communities—and that transition was explicitly tied to independence followed by union. 3) Northern Somalis worked toward the Somali Republic—amply documented In April 1960, the elected Legislative Council in Hargeisa—the highest political authority under British rule—passed a resolution calling explicitly for independence and unification with Somalia on 1 July 1960. This is recorded in Hansard. There is no ambiguity. 4) The April 1960 Joint Communiqué removes all doubt Between 16–22 April 1960, senior Somaliland legislators traveled to Mogadishu and issued a Joint Communiqué with their southern counterparts calling for the creation of a republic on 1 July 1960. It states: “The Territories of Somalia and the Somaliland Protectorate shall be united on July 1st, 1960… The new Somali Republic will be a unitary, democratic and parliamentary State.” It further ordered the merger of the two legislatures into one National Assembly, the election of one President, the formation of one government, the designation of Mogadishu as the capital, and the creation of one national army. This is not the language of two states; it is the blueprint of one republic. 5) London understood the objective was union, not separation In the UK Parliament, the Prime Minister and the Colonial Secretary stated plainly that independence would be granted to the protected tribes of northern Somalia so that union could lawfully take place, acting on the “declared wishes” of Somaliland’s elected leaders. Somaliland’s “independence” was a legal bridge—not the destination. 6) Contemporary media reported union On 6 May 1960, The New York Times reported that Britain would grant independence to Somaliland “so that it could unite with Somalia.” No contemporary account described this as the birth of a separate enduring state.

Djiboutis comment at the emergency UN Security Council regarding Israeli’s re recognition of the republic of Somaliland. Djiboutis representative to the UN Security Council mockingly labelling The republic of Somaliland as “the breakaway region of the so called republic of Somaliland” went on to further inform us why the country he represents has no interest in seeing 6million Somalis in Somaliland with the same rights as the 1 million in Djibouti. He stated: ➡️ Djibouti fully supports the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia. ➡️ Israel's recognition of Somaliland is viewed as a violation of international law and inconsistent with the principles of the African Union and the UN Charter. ➡️ The representative warned that unilateral recognition could undermine peace and stability in the Horn of Africa and create a dangerous precedent for terrorist organisation. ➡️ Djibouti called on all UN Member States to respect Somalia's internationally recognized borders and urged the Security Council to defend the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Notably, today, Maxamuud Xaashi Cabdi, Chairman of the Kaah party in the Republic of Somaliland, defended Djibouti as a friend, aligning himself with Djibouti’s position.

The European Union worked for three decades to minimize the aspirations of the Republic of Somaliland and pushed a failed policy in the Horn of Africa that is unraveling since the recognition of Somaliland’s sovereignty by Israel. Now the EU is left holding the bill for Somalia and worried that a strengthening of the Republic of Somaliland will expose their lack of a coherent strategic policy in the Horn of Africa. Annette Weber, the European Union representative for the Horn of Africa and Red Sea, stated that: ‘now of course we see a shift, and you know what I think we seen in the beginning there was It made Somaliland a bit more vulnerable because it was recognition by one country but I don’t think we’ve seen the end of the story. What we don’t want to see is an either- or. We don’t want to see a strengthening of Hargeisa is a weakening of Mogadishu.’ It is clear that the European Union always wanted to snuff out Somaliland and is now left scrambling and rambling about confederal or federal nonsense and Al Shabaab, which is not a concern of the Republic of Somaliland. Somaliland has secured its own borders with its own funding for three decades, while Somalia requires African Union troops and European Union taxpayer funding. It is the end of the long road of failed policies, and the European Union is left reevaluating its interests in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.

In the corridors of Westminster, momentum is building for a decision that could reshape the Horn of Africa: the formal recognition of Somaliland as an independent state. A representative of His Majesty’s Government recently remarked in conversation that the issue is taking on renewed urgency. At least ten prominent British parliamentarians and peers—both past and present—have publicly expressed their support for #Somaliland in recent years. Political Heavyweights Leading the charge is Sir Sir Gavin Williamson CBE MP MP (Conservative), MP for Stone, Great Wyrley & Penkridge, and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (#APPG) on Somaliland. Williamson’s advocacy has become the most visible symbol of Westminster’s growing awareness that #Somaliland deserves recognition. Joining him are figures such as Kim Johnson (The Labour Party Ireland), Co-Chair of the APPG and MP for Liverpool Riverside, and the ever-eminent Tom Tugendhat MP (Conservative), a respected voice on foreign affairs. The support extends into the House of Lords, with Lord (Edward) Julian Udny-Lister, a life peer and officer of the APPG, and David Howell of Guildford, who pressed the case during an October 2024 Lords debate. Former ministers and members of UK House of Commons have also added their weight: Zac Goldsmith, who openly called for recognition; Tim Loughton, who rallied a cross-party group of 15 MPs to push the Government; Stephen Doughty HC MP, who led delegations to Somaliland; and Paul Blomfield, the former The Labour Party MP who consistently raised Somaliland in #Commons debates until he stepped down in May 2024. This list represents more than isolated goodwill. It signals a cross-party consensus that Somaliland’s case is legitimate, long-standing, and increasingly unavoidable. The Race Against Time For many in #Westminster, the urgency is geopolitical. There is a real fear that #Britain could be outflanked by the United States if Donald J. Trump—moves first on recognition. This most exquisitely spoken Mandarin bluntly put it, “The UK cannot afford to be Trumped on Somaliland.” This sense of urgency is more than political maneuvering. It reflects Somaliland’s unique position: a functioning democracy in a region beset by instability, a partner on counterterrorism, and a former British protectorate whose independence was already once recognized. The Forgotten Independence of 1960 Somaliland’s story is not one of secession, but of interrupted sovereignty. On 26 June 1960, Somaliland achieved independence from Britain. Within days, more than 30 countries—including the UK, the US, Israel, Egypt, Ethiopia, and all five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council—formally recognized it. Crucially, #Somaliland was admitted to the United Nations as a full member on the very day of independence, under UN Resolution 141 (1960). Diplomatic notes were exchanged with the UK, and sovereign relations established. Five days later, in an ambitious but ill-fated experiment, Somaliland entered a union with the former Trust Territory of Somalia. But the union was never legally sound: Somaliland passed a “Union of Somaliland and Somalia Law” on 27 June 1960. Somalia passed a different “Act of Union” on 30 June. The two texts did not match and were never harmonized. Somaliland’s legislature never ratified the provisional Somali constitution. No valid treaty of union was ever deposited at the #UN, as required by Article 102 of the UN Charter. Yet, on 1 July 1960, Somalia presented itself to the world as the “continuation” of both states, effectively absorbing "impersonating," Somaliland’s independent UN membership. To many legal scholars, this amounted to a theft of sovereignty. Somaliland’s statehood was not legally dissolved, but politically sidelined. Impersonated at the UN What followed was decades of instability under the unified Republic of Somalia. The Somali state collapsed into civil war in 1991. From that moment, Somaliland quietly reasserted the independence it had briefly held in 1960. It built its own government, constitution, currency, judiciary, and armed forces. It has held multiple competitive elections judged free and fair by international observers. Unlike Mogadishu, which has struggled #terrorism, #piracy, and foreign interventions, #Somaliland has maintained relative peace and stability. It has acted as a de facto sovereign state for over three decades, yet remains unrecognized in the international system—a paradox born of a union that never legally existed. Why Recognition Matters Now Recognition is more than symbolism. It would unlock access to international financing, formalize Somaliland’s role as a regional security partner, and strengthen the UK’s diplomatic influence in the Horn of Africa. Critically, it would also correct a historical wrong. #Somaliland was recognized once already, its #UN membership unjustly erased without due process. Unlike other self-determination cases, #Somaliland is not seeking to break away from Somalia—it is seeking to restore its rightful, documented independence. A Time For Action In Westminster, the message is increasingly clear: the UK has a unique responsibility and a strategic opportunity. By moving first, #London would reaffirm historic ties, correct a legal injustice, and secure an ally in one of the world’s most volatile regions. As one 'parliamentarian told me: “Somaliland has done everything asked of it—peace, democracy, stability. It is time #Britain did the right thing. Recognition is not just an option; it is an obligation.” For #Somaliland, the wait has already lasted 64 years. The question is no longer whether recognition is deserved, but whether Britain will finally step forward—or allow history to repeat itself, with others leading the way. Somalilanders (video clip) "Last, week: It truly pained me to see that only one flag was missing among those of the Commonwealth countries hanging in Westminster, London — the flag of #Somaliland."

President Abdirahman Irro Convenes Strategic Dialogue with National Political Party Leaders His Excellency Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro), President of the Republic of Somaliland, today convened a high-level consultative meeting at the Presidential Palace with the Chairpersons of the three National Political Parties: WADDANI, KAAH, and KULMIYE. This strategic engagement is part of the President’s ongoing efforts to deepen national consensus, safeguard political stability, and strengthen Somaliland’s democratic resilience during a period of critical national and regional significance. The meeting provided a frank and constructive platform to discuss the evolving political landscape, the imperative of preserving national unity, and the shared responsibility to confront external threats to Somaliland’s sovereignty and constitutional order. In his remarks, President Abdirahman Irro reaffirmed his government’s firm commitment to inclusive governance, principled dialogue, and institutional cooperation. He emphasized that the vitality of Somaliland’s democracy depends on sustained engagement among political stakeholders and collective stewardship of the national interest. The President further underscored the importance of regular, structured consultations between the executive branch and the official opposition parties—not as a matter of convenience, but as a cornerstone of the Republic of Somaliland’s democratic ethos and a guarantor of its long-term stability and credibility. The leaders of the three national parties commended the President’s leadership in fostering principled dialogue at this critical juncture. They affirmed their commitment to working collaboratively in safeguarding national cohesion, advancing electoral preparedness, and reinforcing the foundations of democratic governance. Moreover, the opposition parties expressed their willingness to support government initiatives aligned with the shared aspirations of peace, constitutional order, and sustainable national progress. The meeting condemned the continued and unlawful interference by the Federal Government of Somalia in the eastern parts of the Sool region—a blatant attempt to destabilize Somaliland and undermine its territorial integrity. These actions were characterized as provocative, irresponsible, and a direct challenge to the peace and order preserved by Somaliland through decades of self-governance. The Republic of Somaliland hereby reaffirms its sovereign right to defend its territory and institutions and calls on the international community to take a clear and principled stance against Somalia’s destabilizing conduct, which threatens not only Somaliland’s security but also the wider stability of the Horn of Africa. The meeting concluded with a renewed sense of unity and shared determination to protect Somaliland’s constitutional order, democratic progress, and sovereign dignity—through dialogue, responsible leadership, and unwavering commitment to the nation’s founding principles. 🚨BREAKING: Watch President Cabdiraxmaan Cirro deliver a major strategic case for Somaliland in Washington. Addressing the Hudson Institute, President Irro highlighted Somaliland’s history, the failed 1960 union, the 2005 AU fact-finding mission and the genocide suffered by the people of Somaliland. A video circulating on social media shows a large group of protesters carrying Palestinian flags, voicing anger over Israel’s reported recognition of Somaliland. Groups were seen marching with Palestinian flags to reject the move and condemn any political or diplomatic ties with Israel. Members of the Samaroon tribe are reported to have mobilised in significant numbers in Borama, the capital of Awdal state, which Somalia considers part of its territory. Earlier, Israel announced its recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, sparking condemnation from Somalia’s federal government and many regional and international actors. The move has been widely criticised by Somalia’s government and at least 21 countries across the Arab, African and Islamic world, who reaffirmed Somalia’s territorial integrity. Critics say Israel is trying to destabilise the region for political gain.

From Jomo Kenyatta to Today: Why #Kenya Can Be the Next Country to Recognize #Somaliland After the historic recognition of Somaliland by #Israel, Africa stands at a defining moment. Few countries are better placed than Kenya to lead next. In 1960, Somaliland achieved internationally recognized independence before Kenya itself. At the time, African liberation leaders — including Jomo Kenyatta — acknowledged Somaliland’s statehood as part of Africa’s decolonization journey. Today, Somaliland stands as a peaceful, democratic, and self-governing state, contributing to stability in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea region. Israel has acknowledged reality. Kenya now has a historic opportunity to lead Africa with courage and clarity. 📍 History matters. 📍 Stability matters. 📍 Leadership matters.

BREAKING: Somalia’s Defence Minister, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, launched a scathing attack on Israel and Somaliland’s diplomatic ties, describing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “devil” and arguing that Israel’s recognition of Somaliland has no legitimacy because, in his view, Israel is an occupying state. Fiqi also claimed President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Cirro) had aligned Somaliland with “the greatest enemy of Islam,” alleging that the move had turned what he described as the Somaliland issue from a Somali matter into one opposed by the wider Muslim world. He further asserted that Somaliland’s relationship with Israel would ultimately fail. The minister’s remarks included rhetoric directed at the Jewish state and have drawn criticism from some observers as antisemitic, particularly his characterization of Israel and its prime minister. The comments are likely to fuel further diplomatic tensions following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and the deepening cooperation between Hargeisa and Jerusalem. #Somaliland #Somalia #Israel #MiddleEast #HornOfAfrica #Diplomacy
