In Peter Jackson’s film, when it is Aragorn’s turn to receive a gift, Galadriel looks at the necklace he carries from Arwen and tells him that she has nothing greater to give him than the gift he already bears: Arwen’s love. She then speaks of Arwen’s choice to give up her immortality and remain in Middle-earth for Aragorn. Galadriel fears that by choosing a mortal life and the fate of Men, Arwen will gradually lose the grace and beauty of the Elves. Aragorn responds by saying that he wishes Arwen would leave these shores and sail to Valinor, where she could remain with her own people. It’s a brief but meaningful exchange that highlights the sacrifice behind Arwen’s choice. But in Tolkien’s book, this moment is completely different. Instead of speaking about Arwen’s necklace, Galadriel gives Aragorn the Elessar, the Elfstone, a great green stone set in a silver brooch shaped like an eagle. She explains that she had given it to her daughter Celebrían, who later passed it to Arwen, and now it comes to Aragorn as a token of hope.
