The North Carolina base was originally named in 1918 for Gen. Braxton Bragg, a Confederate general from Warrenton, North Carolina, who was known for owning slaves and losing key Civil War battles that contributed to the Confederacy’s downfall.

You forgot the part about it being the Republicans that freed the slaves from the democrats, and the democrats assassinated President Lincoln for this. This is why we are finally removing the names of these treasonous democrats from our military installations, and ships.

Let's worry about more BS instead of focusing on what matters....being an effective military. So glad I did my time when the leadership wasn't a bunch of candy-asses that don't know what bathroom to use.

When Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, it took over 900 days for freedom to reach enslaved people deep in America's south. Juneteenth is a day to honor the contributions of Black Americans, remember the past, and recommit to a more just future. Happy Juneteenth!

America's history is more than a catalog of mistakes. It is also a story of self-correction, innovation, sacrifice, and freedom. Our museums should present the full picture, not just one side of it. Mike Gonzalez is the Angeles T. Arredondo E Pluribus Unum Senior Fellow at The Heritage Foundation.
