If you guessed that Toronto Police cautioned my videographer for breach of the peace, you’d be correct— not correct at law or in principle, of course, but correct in your estimation of police. My videographer has a documented track record of capturing significant protest moments on video, including eight arrests from the same Antifa network at the last major counterprotest. Yet he was continually chased and harassed at Nathan Phillips Square, with zero police intervention. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Wednesday at a press conference that he supports disbanding the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group (SRG), the counterterrorism unit that carried out the first mass arrests of his administration on Tuesday evening during anti-ICE protests at a Manhattan hotel. Mamdani said he is in talks with police commissioner Jessica Tisch about how to disband the SRG “in ways that are operational,” without specifying any details. When asked about the operational costs of the SRG, Mamdani also said that he would not disband the SRG for budgetary reasons but to “decouple the counterterrorism responsibilities from within the department to police responses to First Amendment activity,” adding “We don’t believe there should be a unit that has both counterterrorism responsibilities and responsibilities to responding to protests.” Mamdani praised anti-ICE protesters, commending New Yorkers for drawing attention to “the horrific abuses of ICE across this country,” even as SRG continues to be deployed at protests.

Many things can be true at once: Bill C-9 risks placing unjust limits on civil liberties. As currently drafted, it is a deeply flawed piece of legislation that warrants serious concern. The Toronto Police Service, like all police forces, has a documented history of Charter violations. Rachelle Friesen’s perspective is shaped by her direct involvement in protests, including her own arrest. Many protesters interpret even minimal enforcement as overreach. A significant portion of the public believes police have been undercharging individuals engaged in unlawful behaviour at Palestine solidarity demonstrations. My personal experience, having been assaulted, intimidated, and witnessing similar conduct, reinforces the view that policing at demonstrations has not been sufficiently effective. #ProtestMania

Police understandably want to keep the peace with minimal friction or risk of escalation. Unfortunately, that can sometimes come at the expense of protecting other citizens’ rights. It is not appropriate to acquiesce to activists’ demands to exclude journalists from documenting a publicly advertised event held in a public park— here, an anti-Canada rally on Canada Day. This is not only hypocritical, given these activists’ own track record of disrupting public order through protests and counterprotests, but it also rewards intimidation and violence. While we have no desire to make police work any harder or more dangerous than it already is, we cannot simply agree to leave because Antifa says so. 📸 Jul 1, 2026 #Toronto #ProtestMania

However, instead of the government addressing the reasons behind the protests and responding to the concerns being raised, the focus seems to be on telling citizens how to protest and warning that the demonstrations could be hijacked. On one hand, they say people have the constitutional right to protest. On the other hand, their statements make it sound as though exercising that right is something to be feared. At this point, it's difficult not to be concerned. Many Nigerians simply want their voices heard and their grievances addressed. Protests in Iran appeared more limited during the day today, but videos emerging tonight show crowds that appear to number in the hundreds in parts of Tehran and in cities such as Ahvaz and Babol. Notably, Reza Pahlavi issued a call for protests tonight. At the same time, within the protest landscape there is no unified political alternative as of now and little evidence of monarchist organization on the ground. What does exist is the powerful media and amplification ecosystem of Iranian monarchists, including Iran International, Manoto, and coordinated & often astroturfed social media activity, which can project the impression of broad national momentum. There is no objective way to measure the true scale, even as many will undoubtedly jump to conclusions.
