As part of our ongoing series on higher education, we focus on why developing and recruiting more Black teachers is especially important for Black students to ensure they continue and finish their education.

My first, and only Black male teacher other than for gym (until I attended a HBCU), was Mr. Hampton - 7 & 8 grade science (8th grade home room). His presence made a big difference in my life. He encouraged me to pursue engineering, which I did ultimately enrolling at Morehouse.

Yes.....schools should be smaller, and more centrally located per neighborhood. Like meeting in a community center. But the big education departments wouldn't approve of such one-on-one attention......kids may actually learn! 🙄

Its always about race on @NewsHour. Getting really tired of their racism.

These are distractions. We need African Americans to embrace the family unit. So many problems would go away if these young men were being raised by caring mature married parents.

I am conflicted on this. I’m thrilled more people can be interested in learning. On the other side, I can’t help but think that this story is talking about black teachers for black kids and white teachers for white kids. How is this integration and equality?
