As predicted, the Spurs unleashed the three "Slash Brothers,” and it may have saved their season. Mitch Johnson was specifically asked after the game about his decision to play De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, and Stephon Castle together, a lineup I wrote about before Game 3 as a potential series-changing... adjustment because New York had shown little ability to contain it. What’s fascinating is that the trio breaks several conventional NBA rules. All three are most effective with the ball in their hands. None are elite high-volume mid range and three-point shooters. On paper, the spacing shouldn’t work. And yet it does and New York can't keep up. Their collective speed, downhill pressure, playmaking, and ability to attack the paint create a different kind of gravity that forces defenses into uncomfortable decisions. Johnson wasn’t interested in giving away too much afterward, responding with a sly smile at the end after being asked about it. Because next week's January 13 Spurs-Thunder matchup has now been flexed to a national broadcast, all eyes will be on who actually suits up. If key players suddenly sit for “tactical reasons,” it could double as a challenge to the league’s TV partners, and a classic bit of Spurs-style gamesmanship from the Godfathers of load management. Meanwhile, Thunder coach Daigneault is a proponent of "professional habits" and after losing three straight to San Antonio his priority is problem-solving and testing on-court strategies. Rachel Reid on her relationship with Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams and how the three of them were in a unique position before and after Heated Rivalry airing. "It was after the filming that we started, you know, chatting in a group chat and stuff like that, and individually over the summer. I think the three of us were in a really unique position compared to everybody else because it was like, definitely our lives were problably about to change the most. A least that's how it felt at the time, especially as we got closer and closer to the show and more and more excitement was building. The three of us were about to level up in a big way, and we kind of felt it. I don't think any of us thought it was going to level up the way it did. But yeah, it was fun. [...] We've all been very busy right now. But I think it's still nice to check in with them and just remember that in the middle of all of this, we're the same three people." 🔗

Denver’s Carson Johnson is one of the most underrated players in college basketball heading into next season. The 6’1 PG had a strong Sophomore season where he averaged 20/2/3 on 46/41/88 splits and was named the Summit League POTY. Johnson was one of the most efficient off the dribble scorers in college basketball, where he was 2nd in total off the dribble made shots in D1 with 116, and shot 45%. Johnson plays with a strong handle and pace and it allows him to consistently get to his spots and create space for himself at a high level. Johnson’s pace and efficiency helped him finish in the 90th percentile in PNR play, and 95tb percentile in Isolation play on a very high sample size. Johnson is an elite mid range scorer who shot 47% from the mid range, and he’s also an elite shooter from three who can consistently create off the dribble, and he’s also an extremely efficient movement shooter. There’s not many players in college basketball with Johnson’s ability and efficiency as a shot creator, and as he progresses his game as a finisher and playmaker, he has one of the highest ceilings of any Mid Major player.

Through his first four games he’s averaging 20/3/5 while shooting 50% from the field and 42% from three on 6 attempts a game. Acuff has been one of the early best freshmen and draft prospects in college basketball this season, with his ability to score and playmake. Asked Nuggets coach David Adelman about the season that Jaylen Brown has had, and he gushed about Brown as both a player and a person. "The the elite shooting from mid range is such a big deal in our game, it's the late-clock ability, his overall size, his ability to play in the middle of the floor, which is really hard to come double people and not give up the three point line to a team like they have, I would just say his continued evolution in his game. "He's an elite, All-Star player, two-way player. I think specifically in New York, there are adjustment periods. We've seen that time and again... My sense is our team has jelled pretty well. I think it was a focus in spring training. I think guys spent a lot of time together in spring training." Part of being a good team over a 6-7 month stretch is finding your identity through adversity. We're facing adversity right now certainly at an earlier stage than any of us expected or wanted, but this has an opportunity to be part of our story - help us find our identity, come through this and understand we have the ability to do that. Based on the guys we have and the quality of work and the quality of people, I believe we will be able to do that."

Cameron Young is playing with a golf ball that would allegedly be compliant with the new roll back rules that will come into effect in a few years time. He was asked about it ahead of the PGA Championship and he says every player in the game is sacrificing distance for control, and he put it in play at the Wyndham last year which he won. “I think I put it in play the same reason that everybody else plays the ball that they play. I hit it during a ball test, one of the Titleist facilities probably close to two years ago and didn't know anything about it and just kind of say, hey, what's that one? Because I liked the flight. “Then as things progressed, I was able to test it last year at Wyndham, able to put that in play, and it's been there since. “Obviously there is no conforming list. I wasn't aware that it would have -- I suppose I read something that said it passed that test, but I wasn't aware of that until very recently. “So at no point was that a consideration. It was just really me trying to optimize my golf, and it's the ball that seems to work the best for me.” He then was asked whether he lost distance with it compared to other balls he’s tested: “Not particularly. I don't think any of us are out really here playing the ball that goes the farthest. I think you'd struggle to find a single person that's doing that. We're all sacrificing a certain amount of things that we feel are worth it, control with irons, control with wedges. For me, that's the biggest thing is being able to control spin, and this is the ball that does the best for me.” Finally he can as asked whether this ball goes further than the one he was using: “No, I hit very similar, yeah. It's much more -- the driver is kind of the easiest thing to deal with, I feel like. For me to get it where it needed to be, I had to just add a little bit of spin, and it kind of comes out at a perfectly playable range. “For me, the biggest thing, like I said, is the irons. This ball is easier to control with the irons. It doesn't spin as much, and it just allows me to be better with my distance control just because it's more consistent.” The golf ball rollback has been a hugely controversial subject but Cameron Young is currently using one that’s compliant and he is playing the best golf of his career. Rich Paul reveals he had Darius Garland lined up for a trade to the Spurs prior to the Fox trade, and that Fox had no problem with being the #2 behind Wemby: "I remember a trade getting ready to take place and De'Aaron and I were talking about it, and we were talking about different options where he could go etc, and obviously I had the Spurs kinda teed up.. At first it wasn't De'Aaron, it was another guard that I represent that I was envisioning going there, because De'Aaron wasn't wanting to be traded yet.. It was Darius Garland. Jay Willams says it’s fascinating when a small tweak is made for the Knicks, it’s such a huge level of adjustment: “Think about what the Golden State Warriors were with Mark Jackson before it became Steve Kerr it just felt a little bit different for that, and may not be apples to apples but last year there’s no way this New York Knicks team wins this game because they don’t get the support from the bench. It’s crazy the difference a year can make from them being in the Eastern Conference Finals opposed to them having a chance to win in the NBA Finals. They played guys like Jose Alvarado you would have never seen that lineup”

Day three of life at their new Ithumba home and Mwinzi, Toto and Natibu ended their adventures with a rainy stroll home. Guess who was leading the charge? None other than the three newbies who are settling in beautifully. Mwinzi is being his usual implacable self, Natibu is already sizing up the rest of the herd, and Toto is leaning on his Keepers as he takes it all in. When they are ready, they will reclaim their place in the wild. This graduation to Ithumba marks the next chapter in that journey, one that will continue to unfold over the coming years.
