The story and celebration of Juneteenth started in Galveston, but its impact is felt far beyond Texas. Generations of Americans refused to accept that freedom should belong to some and not others. They understood that freedom is something to cherish, and that each generation must continue the fight for justice and equality. Today, we celebrate all of the joy of Juneteenth. And we recommit ourselves to ensuring the promise of America belongs to all of us.

Juneteenth represents the moment when enslaved Black Americans deep in Confederate territory finally learned of their freedom two years after Emancipation Proclamation. I am proud of Oakland’s deep history in the struggle for Black liberation and we are committed to continuing that fight until everyone has a fair shot at a happy, healthy life, regardless of the color of their skin. Today, let’s reflect on the dark history of slavery and racism in our nation, celebrate the work that has been achieved, and recommit ourselves to true liberation.
