Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates is joining Mayor Brandon Johnson on his trip to Italy this week. Notably, both Gates and Johnson have been berating other public officials for weeks to fight for more Chicago Public Schools funding from Springfield. “The house is on fire,” Gates told the school board two weeks ago. “You get water.” With Springfield’s legislative session ending May 31, Gates and Johnson have elected to spend time 5,000 miles away from the Capitol.

Stacy Davis Gates must be miserable this morning, and it's not over 760 teacher layoffs. You see, Stacy is only concerned with the loss of dues. According to our math, the 760 teachers laid off could mean CTU loses up to $1,100,000 in member dues. A $1.1M loss is pretty stiff, considering how CTU is desperate to keep control of the Board of Ed. It's also worth considering whether Stacy knew layoffs of this scale was coming. We think she did. CORE will make you poor.

You don’t have to support the White House’s policies to recognize Mayor Johnson and Stacy Davis Gates are desperate to create fear and panic among school children and their families with tall tales of imminent ICE raids. Their latest effort was a press conference claiming ICE used tear gas “near a school.” Neither seems alarmed that WGN reported Chicago leads the nation with 3,000 shot “near schools” last year. Chicago leads nation with 182 school age students 17 years and younger murdered or wounded this year. No mention of this grisly statistic by the mayor or Davis Gates, let alone a press conference. Student safety has never been a priority of either Johnson or CTU leaders. Recall both used COVID as an excuse to shutter schools for 78 weeks in defiance of the science. The last year before schools reopened, 447 children were murdered or wounded. Not a peep about that.

It’s now open season on Chicago Police. A driver ramming into 5 police officers is a direct result of a decade long, scorched-earth, no-holds-barred war of resistance against CPD. This war against police — the purpose of which is to undermine police authority and the rule of law — has been waged by progressive lawmakers, community groups, and the CTU. A campaign of hate against CPD, the result is police have now been backed into a corner by this backlash, and officers have been subject to a dramatic increase in attacks. By stoking baseless and ridiculous fears of police with incendiary comments, the CTU, progressive aldermen, and community groups have created an atmosphere in which people believe it is possible to attack CPD with impunity. It is time for the race hucksters and their political enablers such as Mayor Johnson, Stacy Davis Gates, progressive lawmakers and community groups to stop the campaign of incitement against the police.
