Asked Down boss Conor Laverty after the game on Saturday why his side had sat in so deep and allowed Meath’s goalkeeper to dictate. The answer was fairly obvious but good to hear it from a manager’s perspective and explaining things that might not always make sense to fans 👇

This is evidence of the flaw in having 12 v 11. Teams play piggy in the middle around the arc. More importantly, run the clock down when only having to keep 2 up while on a black card. It is supposed to be a punishment. Therefore, they should still have to keep 3 up.

When the goalie is involved a lot the build up generally is still slow. Donegal yesterday didn’t use Patton in that role, trusted their outfield players and went more direct. I think at 1 stage they had maybe 10 unanswered points and 6 different scorers.

Fairy sure during this clip we had a black card and were managing the clock.

Yeah yous were indeed, and managed that period brilliantly, but it was a theme of the whole first half. Harry Hogan was up a huge amount and Meath flooded the goal with bodies to create that space where Down were penned back and struggled to push out

And there’s the issue, Meath had a black card here yet still had an extra man and could dictate the game comfortably, rule needs to change to stop this plus 1 and maybe then we’ll get less shoot outs

Keeper needs to get ahead of the ball it’s fairly simple

The arc is forcing this lateral play across and over the field. It adds a new kicking dimension which is good but why don't they get rid of the back pass except for inside the opposition 14 metre line, just so an opposing player can't be forced over the end line?

Who knew.... Teams using 12v11 to retain possession similar to the last few years at I/C 🙄🙄 ....

The question that needs to be asked is why wasn't pressure put on up the pitch so it's not a 'slow play' and the keeper can move up without danger. If you mark men up front then all possession is at risk and the keeper can't take a chance to push up.

He's got kilkoo syndrome.... can't adapt to the new rules
