HIGH-SPEED RAIL UPDATE: Track for the first part of California’s High-Speed Rail project in the Central Valley is expected start being laid down next year, according to High-Speed Rail Authority Board Member Henry Perea. The news comes after the project’s board of directors moved forward with the bidding process to start laying down track in the Central Valley. But significant logistical and financial challenges remain for the full statewide route. The project is billions of dollars costlier than originally projected, and there is no estimated completion date for the full statewide route. Gov. Gavin Newsom wants the project to move forward. President Donald Trump and several legislative Republicans, including Senator Tony Strickland (R-Huntington Beach), believe the project is a waste of money. Where do you stand? 2019. After billions of dollars had already been wasted, Gavin Newsom admits that much of the "high speed rail project" is unfeasible. Newsom announced the project would be scaling back approximately 80% but said he would not cancel the entire project, in part because California would have to pay back billions of dollars to Trump's federal government. In other words, keep some of the project going so they can keep taking federal funds and avoid accountability for the money already given. The Biden Admin gave CA approximately $4 billion for high speed rail and Newsom recently sued the Trump Admin for more money. Fortunately he lost. All this for a relatively small route across the Central Valley that was supposed to be completed in 2022 but is now estimated to be completed in 2032 and is massively over budget. Even the Obama Admin was pouring federal dollars into California for "high speed rail" back when he was President. Wouldn't it be interesting to know where that money went? What a scam. BTW many fire trucks in Los Angeles weren't available for the fires earlier this year because the city had no money to pay mechanics to work on the trucks.

For us in the Central Valley, we have had a first hand front row seat to the mismanagement and failures of the California High Speed Rail Authority. What is happening now is not what was told to Californians in 2008. It’s a complete bait and switch. This failed project needs to stop and we need to focus on more pressing priorities in our region - water storage, forest management, rural roads and supply chain infrastructure.
