Looks still. He is doing ~17,500 mph with the ship. Same stack as Challenger. That is how you stay close. The leave-the-bay speed is small — a few hundred feet on nitrogen thrusters. Fog is a teaching overlay only. Vacuum has no wind. If he froze and dropped the 17,500, the shuttle would go without him. First untethered walk. MMU. Feb 7 1984. Courage on the edge.

This iconic photograph is still considered one of the most-terrifying space photographs to date. Astronaut Bruce McCandless II became the first human being to do a spacewalk without a safety tether linked to a spacecraft. In 1984, he floated completely untethered in space with nothing but his Manned Maneuvering Unit keeping him alive.

Song Lingdong, #China's first post-90s spacewalk astronaut, recently shared that growing vegetables in space is his way of "relieving stress". Currently, the sweet potatoes he planted are growing well, providing samples for further analysis of the feasibility of using sweet potatoes as a food source during long-term #space flights in the future.
