Astronaut life is dangerous - Neil Armstrong ejecting from his Lunar Lander trainer when fuel for the attitude control thrusters stopped. Just missed the fireball.

Turns out the LLRV was more dangerous than the Lunar Module itself.

That was part of the reason he was selected to command Apollo 11. Cool under pressure.

And then he was back at work the same day. I’m not sure how they designed spacesuits for you guys, with balls that big.

So calm and collected under pressure. Also proved his skills and mettle on Gemini 8 and the Moon Landing of Apollo 11.

And according to other astronauts, moments later he was back in his office shuffling papers!

Funny thing. Up until a few years ago it was sitting outside the building near where it crashed. NASA kept everything.

story goes the NASA staff were freaking out while Neil was quite calm and waited to the last second as he tried to save the vehicle

Love the story about the real Astro temperament: found at his desk writing the report. Respect!

Not the first time Neil had to be grateful for an ejection sest

Looks like he had --- wait for it --- The Right Stuff!

😳

Not much height left to play with

No see I got told they didn't do any training so this is something else.

Had no idea. This is interesting

The machine was essentially a frame with a jet engine pointing down, with reaction control thrusters like the LEM.

Those early astronauts must be fake, there's no way they could squeeze their massive cajones into that teeny crew cabin.

whoa!

Wow, that was a close call. Glad he’s okay!

Wild!

Wow

Wow!

I had no idea this was a thing. So they had a super-sketchy full-g lander trainer, *and* you could punch out from it? That’s amazing.

All of you men and women are very brave and your knowledge will take us into the Age Of Aquarius, that is just around the bend. All we have to do is stay peaceful for another 6 to 8 months!

Wow, That's a lot of G's

So close

The infamous Bedstand

he ejected early, could have saved that

If such tech existed at that time already, what kind of tech exists now, but available only for specialized research purposes ??

👍

They nicknamed it the flying bedstead if i remember rightly chris. Very difficult to control. But an essential part of apollo training. Armstrong was so lucky that day. Literally a split second later in ejecting and would've probably been killed. As it was he bit his tongue. 😖

For a tiny, tiny inkling of the task, have a go at this:
