It was a great pleasure to welcome former German Chancellor Angela Merkel to World Health Organization (WHO) Headquarters. She has been a longstanding champion for global health. We had a very constructive discussion on the current state of global affairs, the challenges we face on various global health security fronts, the progress of the #PandemicAccord negotiations and the need to keep serving the world's most vulnerable.

300 million people died of smallpox until in 1977 it was erased from the planet due to the multilateral effort lead by the World Health Organization (WHO). Glad to celebrate in Geneva #WHO75 and the work of World Health Organization (WHO) protecting and promoting the human right to health. This year, the World Health Assembly adopted the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034, focusing on: •strengthening evidence •ensuring safety and quality •integrating TCIM into national health systems •unlocking its broader value for biodiversity, sustainability and community well-being. To turn this into action, WHO established the Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in India. No single country, culture or tradition has all the answers. But together, we hold the collective wisdom we need. I call on governments, academia and industry to galvanize new investments in traditional medicine — guided by science, ethics and equity.

Football and sport have the power to unite the world. But also, football and other sports help to prevent heart disease, cancer and diabetes and can also improve mental health and wellbeing. The partnership between World Health Organization (WHO) and FIFA has allowed us to promote physical activity and healthy food, including at the World Cup and many other FIFA events. We will continue to work together to strengthen the links between the global game and global health.
