BMW M3, E92. 414 hp. From a 4.0L naturally aspirated V8. Revving to 8,400 rpm with no turbo. 0–100 km/h in around 4.6 seconds. Back then, 400 hp meant revs and sound in the 2000s. Not torque, not instant speed. This was about the experience, this car wanted you to rev the engine hard, this is a backroads car for going fast. One of the last naturally aspirated M3s. Compared to a modern M340i with maybe similar power, this feels slower, but this M3 is way better feeling and its a V8 M3, the only V8 M3 and the older M3's feel way way more alive.

Mid-engine Audi madness came only with the early R8 V8, then the V10. A naturally aspirated 5.2-litre Lamborghini V10, paired with a gated manual in its purest form. Around 518 hp and a layout Audi had never attempted before. This was a supercar for the masses, it didn't look as flashy, it's not like a reskinned Huracan, just an Audi. BMW fitted the N57S - a 3.0L inline-six diesel with three turbochargers working in sequential stages, two small high-pressure units and one larger low-pressure unit. 381 HP and 740 Nm from three litres of diesel. Mercedes built it at a time when cost and weight were secondary concerns, the brief was simply to make the best car in the world, the perfect luxury car. The S420 uses the M119 4.2L V8, 275 HP and 400 Nm, not as powerful as the S500, not as expensive as the S600, but the same platform, the same interior, and the same build quality that allows these cars to cover 400,000 km and still drive as they should. It wasn’t positioned as a budget alternative, it was aimed directly at the BMW E65, Mercedes W220 S-Class, and Audi A8 D3. Even Lexus LS buyers were part of the target, with Cadillac DTS floating at the edges of the segment. The engineering was serious: refinement, complexity, and ambition far beyond what the VW badge suggested. And then it vanished. No successor, no continuation, because it was recieved as an expensive Passat, but the people who knew, it's actually a really really good luxury car. VW proved it could build a top-tier luxury car, then walked away as if the whole project never happened. This here is the 6.0 W12, the Phaeton of Phaetons.

Now if I told you that a big heavy Audi sedan spanked the entire grid of sports cars like the Viper, Corvette, BMW M3 and Porsche GT3s, you wouldn’t believe it, but in 2003 that’s exactly what happened. Built by Champion Racing in 15 weeks, the SPEED World Challenge RS6 used a Cosworth-developed 4.2L twin turbo V8 making about 475 hp with a 6 speed quattro drivetrain. At roughly 1,383 kg it relied on torque, traction and tire life rather than revs. Randy Pobst won the 2003 drivers title and Audi took back to back manufacturers championships, with Galati winning multiple races in 2004.

At the time it was compared with cars like the Aston Martin DB7 Vantage, Ferrari 360 Spider, and Porsche 996 Carrera 4S or Turbo. That alone shows what level BMW was aiming for. Yet the Z8 was never followed by anything similar. For daily ownership the naturally aspirated 528i remains the quieter, simpler interpretation of what a mid-range 5 Series should be. If you are looking to get one, just know in EU it was N53 powered in all of the NA 6 cylinder cars. And its not better.

Under the bonnet was the M117 5.0L V8 producing 231 PS in the early cars, later updated to 245 PS for the second series from 1986, with the engine revised again to 261 PS by 1988. After a few years of development, the first fully working prototype simply called the Koenigsegg CC was completed in 1996. It was not a production car but it proved the concept the design and the performance potential, powered by a mid mounted 4.6 L V8 with around 650 hp a 6 speed manual transmission and double wishbone suspension. That prototype eventually evolved into the CC8S which became the first Koenigsegg customers could actually buy in 2002.

And it still looks exactly like what an S-Class should be. Elegant, solid and unmistakably Mercedes.
