🔵 EXTORTION UPDATE - ADDITONAL CHARGES LAID 🔵 Our Organized Crime & Offender Management Section has laid charges against 5 men in relation to an elaborate scheme to extort a Calgary victim. This incident is an escalation of the ongoing violence associated to an extortion series that is targeting the South Asian community. 📍 Last week, a man was kidnapped from a residence in Edmonton by 4 men. The victim was assaulted, threatened at gunpoint & forced into a vehicle where he was driven from Edmonton to Calgary. Once in Calgary, suspects attempted to use the Edmonton victim to lure a second victim out of his residence in Cityscape. The second victim & his wife attempted to leave their residence, at which point they were followed & threatened with a firearm. These victims fled back to their residence & contacted police. Police located a vehicle fleeing the area & arrested 2 men. The remaining suspects drove the first victim back to Edmonton, where he was released. 4 men have been charged and a 5th is wanted on warrants. 📌 Taranveer SINGH, 24, Daksh GAUTAM, 25, Akashdeep SINGH, 18 & Pardeep SINGH, 24, are each facing unlawful confinement, firearms & assault-related charges. 📌 Gagandeep SINGH, 29, is also wanted on criminal warrants in relation to this incident. “This is a significant escalation in violence in the extortion incidents that we have seen in Calgary so far. Since this series began, we have been working very closely with our policing partners nationally to share information & co-ordinate our response, which allowed us to quickly make arrests in this case.” - Supt. Jeff Bell of the CPS Criminal Operations & Intelligence Division. We thank the Edmonton Police & Canada Border Services Agency for their support. We believe additional suspects were involved. According to Francis Ford Coppola's pre-production notes for The Godfather, the scene in which Tom Hagen is kidnapped by Sollozzo and his men was written to take Hagen through a carefully structured emotional arc, which Robert Duvall played with remarkable precision. It begins with fear. Coppola’s notes describe him as “really frightened, sweating. He thinks he’s going to be killed,” and you can see that fear in Duvall’s eyes as he looks up at Sollozzo. Then comes grief. Hagen is told that Vito Corleone is dead; the man who has been his father since he was eleven years old. In his annotated copy of Mario Puzo’s novel, Coppola underlined the line, “He was surprised at his own grief.” Duvall plays the moment beautifully, almost taken aback by the grief that overwhelms him. Then comes shame. This is perhaps the most subtle part of Duvall’s work. The novel describes the moment Hagen realizes Sollozzo never intended to kill him: “Finally Hagen’s mind was working. For the first time he really believed that Sollozzo did not mean to kill him or hold him as a hostage. The sudden relief from fear that flooded his body made him flush with shame.” If you look closely, you can see the subtle shift in Duvall’s performance. As Hagen realizes he is no longer in immediate danger, a sense of embarrassment comes over him at how overwhelmed he was by his own fear. This is where, as Coppola wrote in his notes, “Hagen pulls himself together.” By the end of the scene, he is no longer reacting emotionally but fulfilling his role within the Corleone family; evaluating Sollozzo’s proposal exactly as a consigliere would.

I've got enough experience doing this to know that it's probably going to be weeks rather than months for Mr. Atlas. Our wonderful house dog at Happy Doggo has had two huge operations and we've given him every chance imaginable. I've just noticed in the past few days that his energy levels have dropped. He's taken an extra hour in his bed. He's having longer lounges on the couch. His energy has dipped and his eyes are just that little bit cloudy. that has all been confirmed by blood work and lots of different tests. We are a rescue and ultimately we're judged on how many dogs we can save. I always knew that it would be a quality of life thing with Atlas and that ultimately we would not be able to give him a long life. I do happen to believe, though, that the work we do in making these dogs happy at the end of their lives is just as important as anything else we do at scale. Atlas is still at that stage where he has great spurts of energy and goes on walks and looks for attention from all his favorite humans. We'll wrap him up in cotton wool, pamper him, shower him in love and get him all the meds he can have. No stone will go unturned to make sure Atlas continues to live his dream life while he can. I always say that dogs live in the moment. Atlas can't remember his horrid times on the streets or his massive tumor that he carried around for years. All he knows is the love, attention, great food, and wonderful life he will have today. Every other day will be a bonus and we’ll be with him every step of the way ❤️
