Every time a comedian comes under fire, this is what I wish I could scream from the rooftops: You’re allowed to speak about what you find to be “inappropriate” comedy, but just understand that—in this instance—you almost always sound annoying to everyone else in the room. You sound like every other person who’s ever complained about how we “shouldn’t joke about that.” In this instance, there’s nothing special, moving, or compelling about your voice. If a joke fails with an audience, a joke fails. If it fails repeatedly, it’s probably either not funny or not delivered well. If it’s not funny, it shouldn’t be told.
