Students fled their classrooms in fear on the morning of December 8 after Thai military attacks erupted along the border between Cambodia and Thailand. The Ministry of Education has ordered the temporary closure of schools in Oddar Meanchey to ensure the safety of students and teachers. According to the National Defence Ministry, the incident occurred at about 5:04 a.m., when Thai military forces allegedly opened fire on Cambodian units stationed at several locations stretching from the An Ses area in Preah Vihear province to Tamoan Thom in Oddar Meanchey province.

The purpose of the pilgrimage is to advocate for a permanent ceasefire and to promote lasting peace, stability, and safety in both Cambodia and Thailand. Additionally, the pilgrimage includes offering alms to encourage the Thai authorities to release the remaining 18 captured soldiers. The peace pilgrimage starts at Wat Phnom and ends at the Independence Monument. Armed clashes between the Cambodian and Thai militaries took place from July 24 through 28 along the border, forcing thousands of Cambodian and Thai civilians to flee for safety.​ Despite the ceasefire agreement reached on July 28, both countries continued to accuse each other of violating the ceasefire up until the GBC meeting, where both agreed in the 13 joint commitment points.
