Pretty sure the petroleum jelly molecular size doesn't let anything in and doesn't let anything out..but I never actually looked into it myself, I was just taught it since it's used as a common barrier to protect skin from tints and other harmful invasives etc..coconut oil is probably better to protect but it melts and it breaks down pretty fast so it needs reapplication often.
