Tourette’s activist John Davidson has released a statement after he shouted the N-word as part of an involuntary tic at the BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday night. In the statement, Davidson thanked BAFTA for the invitation to the awards, in which he is the subject of the award-nominated biographical film ‘I Swear’. He continued to explain that his tics are “involuntary and are not a reflection of my personal beliefs”. Davidson left the ceremony early, and said he was “mortified if anyone considers my involuntary tics to be intentional or carry any meaning”. 🗣️ Aoife Moore joins Anton to give us the latest.

Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting the award for best visual effects. After the incident, the academy released a statement, saying that John Davidson, the man who shouted the N word at Jordan and Lindo, "chose to leave the auditorium and watch the rest of the ceremony from a screen, and we would like to thank him for his dignity and consideration of others, on what should have been a night of celebration for him." The BBC, which aired the awards ceremony, later apologized in a statement as well. It did not, however, address why the slur was not immediately removed from the broadcast.
