During the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) on Sunday night, an executive producer in the audience, who has Tourette syndrome shouted a racial slur as "Sinners" stars Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting the award for best visual effects. After the incident, the academy released a statement, saying that John Davidson, the man who shouted the N word at Jordan and Lindo, "chose to leave the auditorium and watch the rest of the ceremony from a screen, and we would like to thank him for his dignity and consideration of others, on what should have been a night of celebration for him." The BBC, which aired the awards ceremony, later apologized in a statement as well. It did not, however, address why the slur was not immediately removed from the broadcast.

One of the actors from I Swear, a film about the life of Tourette’s sufferer John Davidson, has come out in support of him following the BAFTAs controversy. The film is based on Davidson’s life, and he also appears in it. At the ceremony, Davidson was heard shouting several profanities, including a derogatory term aimed at Black people, as a result of his condition. His co-star stressed that Tourette’s is a neurological disorder people have no control over and that John had every right to attend the BAFTAs.

Let’s educate people about Tourette’s , watch the film I swear and you will realise John Davidson is an inspiration to many and is not a racist. Upsetting word yes but he meant no malice or ill feeling towards the 2 actors who handled it very well. First time I met John his first sentence to me was a hurtful tic. He can’t help it. The BBC has launched what it's calling a "fast-track investigation" into why a racial slur - made during its coverage of the BAFTA film awards - wasn't edited out. He even removed himself from the theatre at one point because he was having such a severe tic attack. 2. Coprolalia causes the involuntary utterance of taboo or obscene language, including slurs. Just because he didn’t call the Queen a cracker or tell the woman with cancer that she’s a r***rd, doesn’t make it any less “offensive” on the surface. My point is to illustrate that coprolalia has no limits, and no sensitivities. It is involuntary at its core and leads to many uncomfortable or inappropriate situations. Need more explicit proof? I’ve attached a video of a black lady called Ruth shouting (non-black) racist slurs in a supermarket and doing the Sieg Heil. She admits that no race, religion, gender, sexuality etc is “off limits” because of her tourettes. She also clarifies that she is not racist. ITS BECAUSE SHE HAS TOURETTES. But you utter fools are conveniently ignoring those facts because you want an excuse to rant, rave, and try to destroy the life of a disabled man who has spent his entire life with an incurable medical condition that causes involuntary utterances. And who has dedicated his entire life to raising awareness and dispelling misinformation around the symptoms of tourettes. What about the black people with Tourettes who spout racial slurs against asians, pakistanis, gay people, et al? And what about the black people with Tourettes who have come out in defence of John Davidson… because they actually understand tourettes and the involuntary nature of coprolalia. “The woman who was taking care of [John Davidson] in the movie was dying of cancer, and he kept on saying, ‘you’re gonna die of cancer!’ He said, ‘fuck the queen.’ He was having his car searched, and he said, ‘I’ve got a bomb in there.’ He’s been arrested. He’s been beaten.” I cannot imagine what it’s like living with profound Tourette Syndrome. I am praying for more compassion for Davidson and for everyone else afflicted. Looking forward to watching I Swear.

For historian Elizabeth Pryor, the N-word posed a quandary. On the one hand, her father, comedian Richard Pryor, used the word on stage as part of his routine. But he would also tell her when she was a child not to let anyone call her the N-word. "I just knew in my heart there was a difference between the word that he was trying to highlight and the racist word that I was called at school," she told PBS News' Geoff Bennett. "But it was hard to figure out." Elizabeth, a professor at Smith College, has spent much of her career studying the origins of the N-word. "He literally told me I had to punch somebody out if they ever call me the N-word," she said. So it was hard to figure out, as was my dad in many ways, which is part of the story."
