One day Earth may look similar to this. There is no argument that climate change is real. It happened on Venus and it’s constantly happening on Earth. Human interaction most definitely has some effects on the planet’s climate change, but so too do non-human factors — even to a greater degree. My hope is that, not only can humans work to slow down the process, but also one day come up with solutions to reverse it.

Elon Musk and Joe Rogan discussed animal agriculture in the latest episode of podcast The Joe Rogan Experience, with both of them making a number of inaccurate claims about meat’s impact on the planet. Raising animals, particularly cows, for meat has the biggest impact on the climate and the environment of all foods. Animal agriculture contributes at least 16.5 percent of total global emissions. The reason that ruminant animals like cows are so bad for the climate is that they produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas with up to 80 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide in its first 20 years in the atmosphere. In addition, the vast amount of land used to graze animals or grow food to feed them — 80 percent of all agricultural land — could otherwise be absorbing carbon if it were returned to nature. What a sad sight on the same road I grew up on outside of Altamont, NY. Another solar complex going in on prime farmland and wildlife habitat, adjacent to a Wildlife Management Area (that seems to be their favorite). As the locals refer to this location: “one of the prettiest views on the whole hill.” You’re looking at dozens of acres of tracker frames, getting ready to support Chinese-manufactured solar panels that will only generate at 12-15% of their annual potential in our climate. The power won’t stay local or lower anyone’s bills in the area. In fact, taxes will go up as the municipality struggles to make up for the property tax this land was previously paying before being destroyed for a solar industrial complex.
