🇺🇬 BARYOMUNSI BLAMES “EXTERNAL FORCES” AS MEDICAL INTERNS HOLD BACK FROM POSTINGS Minister Chris Baryomunsi says medical interns have been deployed to eligible hospitals and were expected to report between 3 and 14 August, as government continues consultations over their welfare concerns. In his response to Parliament: • He... says he held a six-hour meeting with leaders of the medical interns. • He says government acknowledges concerns over the new policy measures on interns’ welfare. • He blames “external forces” for advising interns not to report for duty. • He argues that internship is a transition to becoming a fully licensed professional and that interns need to complete it to practise. • He rejects claims that interns run Uganda’s health system, pointing to facilities that operate without interns. • He says government expects to conclude consultations and present its final position by next week. 🇺🇬The Medical interns debate is back on the floor. Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, MP for Nakawa West, has asked Government to drop the reported policy of suspending facilitation for medical interns. He says medical interns provide critical labour after completing their training and should not be expected to serve patients without support for basic needs such as accommodation and feeding. “How do you expect them to show up to take care of us, including us in this place?” Why it matters: the issue touches both health worker welfare and patient care, especially in public hospitals that rely on interns as part of frontline service delivery. 🇺🇬 TAYEBWA: THE TWO KEY INTERN DEMANDS HAVE BEEN RESOLVED Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa says the two major issues medical interns raised have now been addressed. “We were demanding from the minister, one, that the interns should be paid. They reversed the decision, the interns are going to be paid.” “Number two, we are saying, the interns were demanding that they need to be allowed to graduate before they can do internship. And it has been resolved.”

The government has said that medical interns will be paid the same amount, UGX 1,268, 929 which is subject to tax resulting to a net pay of UGX 1 million. To me, this is only a short term solution. What happens to the upcoming cohorts? Shall medical interns have to go on strike every time just to get paid? We must end this cycle once and for all. Let the government scrap the National Health Policy that was sneaked in and come up with a properly drafted, permanent solution to the remuneration and welfare of medical interns. And let’s be clear: the demand is UGX 4 million, not UGX 1 million. We need a lasting solution, not temporary fixes every time doctors and interns protest.

Health Minister Motsoaledi appealed to interns, stating the belief that taking sick leave extends internship is "ill-founded" and not government policy. He said interns only fail to complete internship due to "very, very serious misconduct"—citing an example of an intern who altered lab results to avoid work, causing a patient to fall into a coma. He emphasized: "You are more protected as an intern than us... This is a democracy. It has got very serious labor laws." #HealthOmbud #Interns #HealthcareWorkers #DrMotsoaledi #SouthAfrica

1. The government must ensure that employers in the private sector pay allowances to their interns, says Muar MP Syed Saddiq. “The last thing we want is for companies to hire so many interns for free, treat them as free labour, without paying them a single cent,” he adds.

Today, the pre-medical interns who were denied deployment by government have filed a case against the Attorney general and DGHS Ministry of Health- Uganda in Kampala high court to challenge the decision against which these qualifying medical graduates were excluded. There is indeed no doubt that this decision was illogical, unfair and reckless. Our prayer is that the judges Judiciary Uganda review this decision and order for immediate deployment of all medical interns. Note that medical internship is key for full licensure as well as career advancement. Undeployment of medical interns puts our career at a standstill. #DeployAllMedicalInterns #PaidMedicalInternship

The challenge is on Wisdom indeed does come with age and experience!

I agree, Intern doctors should be ranked above DEI Pharma, Atiak Sugar, Lubowa, and Inspire Coffee – which have and continue to consume billions. While those other are (unnecessary) promises for the future, intern doctors are presently real in the lives of ordinary Ugandans. As has been said plenty of times, it is not uncommon to find a public medical facility manned entirely by interns. Their labor cannot to be for free. In fact, interns is the language of exploitation. These are actual doctors – only new in the field. Thanks Dr Obuku (Ekwaro A. Obuku)

🕵️SHADY ANSWER: Listen to the way Tyler Bowyer answers the questions if he is a sexual deviant or had sex with young male interns. Stuttering and round about answering the question when he was interviewed on an LDS Podcast. The last thing he was asked was "Is there any truth to any of this?" Bowyer's initial response: "So there is (there is some truth?)....so, so straight off the bat" Notice he was not asked if he is BISEXUAL and doesn't answer that. He just says he isn't "gay" and eventually says "that never happened."

This is happening in MSAS Medical College, Bahraich (UP). Interns are being forced to eat from the hostel mess even though the food quality is so bad that students have suffered colonic edema, intestinal perforation, vomiting and diarrhoea Many had shifted to an FSSAI approved tiffin service due to poor mess hygiene and irregular duty hours. But on 19 June, when the tiffin provider came, the vice principal seized the food and the principal grabbed the provider by the collar and started shouting When the interns went to talk, they were blamed for not intervening during the scuffle. The principal then issued a 2 day hostel eviction notice to the entire intern batch and threatened to withhold their June stipend. This is not just harassment. It is a complete misuse of authority These are MBBS doctors in their mandatory internship, not hostages.

Dr Davji Atellah, Sec Gen KMPDU: Before we had CS Health Aden Duale coming to that office, we had a lot of demonstrations and strikes that were mostly being led by my predecessor, Dr Ouma Oluga. For the last 3 years, we have had interns being posted without demonstrations; we have had interns being paid their salaries in the first month of posting. This is an improvement because we had accepted abnormalities in the sector

In an exclusive interview #ToryLanez speaks out as he continues to fight for a fair review of his case. His legal team points to missing pages from key medical records that jurors never saw and argues that important evidence was never fully presented at trial. Tory says had he taken the stand himself he truly believes the verdict would have been different. He also makes it clear he is not angry with Megan and holds no ill will toward her. What he wants is simple for someone to take an honest look at his case and give him a fair shot. His team says they are not only pursuing appeals but are also seeking a pardon and plan to take the case to the Supreme Court as early as next week.
