The scene in The Batman where he first emerges from the shadows and beats up the thugs in the train station was inspired by Goodfellas - specifically the moment where Henry Hill pistol-whips his neighbor. Matt Reeves explains: "I wanted that moment where he says “I'm Vengeance” and Rob comes out and you see him as this Batman for the first time, I wanted it to be like that moment, a shocking moment, in Goodfellas when Henry Hill…the neighbour has assaulted Karen who he's dating, and he gets so angry you see him drive up across the street from the neighbour. He gets out of the car, they look at him coming, and he takes out his revolver, and he beats this guy senselessly. It's shocking, and at that moment you realize the depth of his rage, and just how dangerous he can be. So I wanted Batman at this stage of the movie to kind of shock the audience, and for people to say like “Okay well what kind of Batman is this?” and to see that he was a Batman who acted from this very visceral personal point of view - that this was all about vengeance." Quote comes from the director’s commentary track off The Batman Blu-ray. (play with sound on to hear Giacchino’s epic score)
