BBCOR explained way too fast and poorly…but most likely enough info in this video for you to learn something you didn’t know.

Great post. I am definitely in the hater camp of the new rules but I’m keeping an open mind. I’ve always felt there should be a -5 BBCOR option for 14U, but allowing up to -6 throughout HS seems preposterous. Looking forward to your findings.

Understandable, there are many factors that I think will surprise people, and might actually get people in your camp to adjust their opinion. Or, maybe the results will prove your assumptions were correct. Need time, and for the market to react.

Is it safe to say the COR is essentially the rebound similar to a trampoline. As the trampoline rebound gets locked at .5, the heavier the bat, the higher the rebound potential. Is that a fair analogy?

Фото профиля TheBatDoctor

That’s pretty good conclusion. There are important caveats, but that’s not “wrong” per se

Thanks so much for making this video. A lot of people are jumping to conclusions way too quickly based on BPF standard USSSA bats. For a whole host of reasons, those results largely dont matter when talking about BBCOR. I suspect that we might see some marginal max EV...

VERY interesting! I’m curious how today’s bats compare to the ‘87 Easton aluminum bat (33”) I used in HS?

Фото профиля TheBatDoctor

Way more “dead” these days.

@Doc_Glaucoma You think the COR was *lower* on the older bats? Also - can the COR be greater than .5 outside of the testing range? Let’s say 4 inches from the cap, for example.

Фото профиля TheBatDoctor
TheBatDoctor2 месяцев назад

@Doc_Glaucoma If COR was greater than .5 outside of the testing range, it would be “usssa composite-ish” hot at 6in. It’s the physics of the construction.

This is great info by the way. I can tell you anecdotally that all of the medium size kids on my 13U team preferred the BBCOR over any USA bat, regardless of drop. Even if it was a little too heavy for them.

Ball goes in at 85 mph let's say, how are Kids getting readings of 100 mph exit velo?

Фото профиля TheBatDoctor

Because the force of the bat being swung. In testing it’s locked into a vice

What is the recoil speed of a wood bat? What about my easton stealth from the early 2000’s?

Фото профиля TheBatDoctor

Wood on the sweet spot? About the same. Your stealth was hotter. I’ve seen higher velos from wood…because…mass

Im confused, the change was to drop on USA bats & talked extensively about BBCOR ratio of 50% but not one lick 👅 about the USA ratio

It’s still BBCOR

Because I know the peanut gallery is going to ask and it's what resonates with them more than BS and EV #s, can you record the distances the balls go with each bat?

Фото профиля TheBatDoctor

Not today, but I definitely will and I will be posting the results.

Are all BBCOR bats basically the same or are some better than others?

Фото профиля TheBatDoctor

The difference is that some models don’t drop off as much outside the 6” spot

Where do they consider the sweet spot to be

Фото профиля TheBatDoctor
TheBatDoctor2 месяцев назад

Great question, 5 1/2 inches, and 6 inches from the end of the bat are always the hottest locations. The difficulty and developing a bat is keeping that location legal while you try to enhance the performance of the other locations. Hence Ring technology, thicker walls, etc..

@GerardM62228871 So the areas outside this testing zone could be >0.5, potentially rewarding miss hits?

Фото профиля TheBatDoctor
TheBatDoctor2 месяцев назад

@GerardM62228871 No. It’s impossible due to physics. The further away one gets from The 6” spot, the performance drops off exponentially. It’s why those locations aren’t tested.

Why didn’t they share the data you’re testing before passing the rule change?

I really do believe they thought more people understood, basic physics, and the basics of how bats work. Clearly, seeing the clutched pearls and freaking out, that is not the case.

The point is reach. They can hit an outside pitch with comparable leverage as a pitch over the middle. Pulling a pitch on the outside half of the plate down the third base line with the same intensity as an inside pitch.
