Beekeepers in New Zealand have been ordered to burn their healthy bees... “We’ve been told to burn healthy strong bee hives.” “Look at how healthy these bees are, no disease or anything.” Bees are quite possibly the most important insect to exist - it’s not a coincidence they are now dying out rapidly with Governments also persecuting Beekeepers. WCK stepped in with sugar and equipment to help feed surviving bees and support local beekeepers as they rebuild. Pollinators are essential to the food we eat every day. Usually, we think of bees as honey bees in apiaries. But in fact, most bee species do not nest above the ground, but underneath! These ground bees make their homes in the soil. Unfortunately, they are often viewed as pests, although they are native pollinators, better at pollinating native plants compared to other bee species. So next time when you find a nest of ground bees, don’t try to get rid of them – they may be helping you more than hurting you.
