North by Northwest (1959) Movie Clip | Crop Duster Chase Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) escapes a narrowing attack from a crop duster in the fields of Indiana. Watch the iconic plane scene from the Alfred Hitchcock classic North by Northwest. ► This scene was filmed with a real airplane while the shot where the plane crashes into the fuel truck was done using large models of both truck and plane. ► While filming Vertigo (1958), Alfred Hitchcock described some of the plot of this project to his frequent leading man and “Vertigo” star James Stewart, who naturally assumed that Hitchcock meant to cast him in the Roger Thornhill role, and Stewart was eager to play it. In fact, Hitchcock wanted Cary Grant to play the role. By the time Hitchcock realised the misunderstanding, Stewart was so anxious to play Thornhill that rejecting him would have caused a great deal of disappointment. Hitchcock delayed production on this movie until Stewart was already safely committed to filming Otto Preminger's Anatomy of a Murder (1959) before officially offering him the role in this movie. Stewart had no choice but to turn down the offer, allowing Hitchcock to cast Grant, the actor he had wanted all along.

It's no secret that Michael Bay likes to shoot his films with as much practical effects as possible. In #Transformers (2007) there is a shot where Optimus Prime and Megatron crash through a building, this shot was done practically using a miniature at 1/4 scale by ILM. Doing this shot practically allowed them to get the randomness of the destruction without having to do expensive simulations. The CG robots were then added into the shot to merge the photographic plate with the CG elements. When doing live-action films, it is always a good idea to shoot physically as much as possible. This provides the VFX artists with real world reference to ground their work in and allows them to compliment the shot with CG elements. One of the reasons the original Transformers trilogy looks so good is because of the incredible blend of practical and digital effects. It is difficult to watch the film and spot what is real and what is CG. ILM VFX Supervisor Scott Farrar talks through how this scene was pulled off:
