Before Google. Before YouTube walkthroughs. Before Reddit threads... You called Nintendo. A real human picked up, and told you where to go and what to do. That's it. That was the tech support. That was the entire internet. Those were the days. What game did you actually call about?

Calling support was for the rich kids. The rest of us had a friend who would come over to show us how to beat the Joker in the NES Batman game. He would charge soda and cookies/chips for his time, though.

Kids today will never understand how legendary it felt getting stuck in a game for days just to hear one random guy on the phone save your entire playthrough 😭🎮

Love this, so true. I rang Nintendo from my mum's house about the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time. A bloke talked me through it and I finally finished the game. What did you call about?

I remember getting in shit with my dad for calling one of those as a kid. They charged like $1 a minute and kept you waiting for ages.

"Those were the golden days 🔥 Real human on the phone walking you through Zelda... no YouTube, no Reddit, just pure Nintendo magic. What a time to be alive."

That was the big one for a lot of us back then. You'd get stuck in some dungeon—maybe Level 9, or trying to figure out the whistle, or where the hell the Master Sword even was—and after banging your head against it for days (or weeks), your parents would finally cave and let you call the Nintendo hotline. A real human on the other end, probably sounding like they were 19 and had played the game 500 times that week, would patiently walk you through it. No spoilers for the whole thing, just enough to get you unstuck.

A Link to the Past, on the third dungeon, the game counselor told me to fall from the top floor to the bottom, my kid brain was blown as I was not thinking in the 3rd dimension.

Those counselors were legends. They kept an entire generation from rage-quitting before rage-quitting was even a term. What about you—what game made you dial the number?

Gen Z reading this like we're describing carrier pigeons. Convenience isn't nostalgia, it's progress — and yes, we waited on hold for 20 minutes for a tip that now takes 10 seconds.

Other big offenders were Metroid (those damn invisible platforms or the final area), Dragon Warrior (grinding and that one dragon), and later stuff like Super Metroid or Final Fantasy games. But Zelda was the classic. Millions of calls went through that line over the years.

I used to solve all my own gaming problems, never called anybody at Nintendo. You could say Nintendo indirectly taught me to solve problems on my own. 😆

Damn that would’ve been cool for me to have as a kid. But I didn’t live in the US and didn’t no English so imagine how hard some games were to complete but still was so much fun.

It felt like magic. You were talking to someone at Nintendo HQ who knew the game inside out. No YouTube, no GameFAQs, no wikis—just you, a landline, and a counselor who might also slip you a hint for a secret room or the right path in the Lost Woods.
