Calling support was for the rich kids. The rest of us had a friend who would come over to show us how to beat the Joker in the NES Batman game. He would charge soda and cookies/chips for his time, though.

I remember getting in shit with my dad for calling one of those as a kid. They charged like $1 a minute and kept you waiting for ages.

That was the big one for a lot of us back then. You'd get stuck in some dungeon—maybe Level 9, or trying to figure out the whistle, or where the hell the Master Sword even was—and after banging your head against it for days (or weeks), your parents would finally cave and let you call the Nintendo hotline. A real human on the other end, probably sounding like they were 19 and had played the game 500 times that week, would patiently walk you through it. No spoilers for the whole thing, just enough to get you unstuck.

A Link to the Past, on the third dungeon, the game counselor told me to fall from the top floor to the bottom, my kid brain was blown as I was not thinking in the 3rd dimension.

Other big offenders were Metroid (those damn invisible platforms or the final area), Dragon Warrior (grinding and that one dragon), and later stuff like Super Metroid or Final Fantasy games. But Zelda was the classic. Millions of calls went through that line over the years.

It felt like magic. You were talking to someone at Nintendo HQ who knew the game inside out. No YouTube, no GameFAQs, no wikis—just you, a landline, and a counselor who might also slip you a hint for a secret room or the right path in the Lost Woods.
