At the Daytona 500 in February of 2001 Dale Earnhardt Sr. hit the wall at the end and tragically lost his life. In July NASCAR returned for the first time. It was the first BIG race I went to. I had been to the pocono infield many times but this was Daytona. I was a Jimmy Spencer fan at that point but what I saw that night left me speechless and teary eyed. I watched a man take the victory at a track that took his dad's life. Every one in that place was a junior fan that night. It is absolutely one of my most fond memories.

Briscoe actually took a pretty decent shot into the wall Herbst's crew had their driver come to pit road so as to not risk bringing out a caution while the 45 was out front. "We do not want the yellow thrown. Get it down." 35 crew put tires on it and Herbst rolled down pit road to cross the finish line
