Elon Musk: In the future, SpaceX will generate sustainable rocket propellant. “We do have a long-term plan for sustainability of rocket flights by generating propellant using sustainable energy, wind and solar. Starting first with liquid oxygen – and for Starship, it's almost 80% liquid oxygen, and 20% liquid methane. It's obviously pretty easy to create oxygen, you just use wind and solar electricity and you do air separation as the oxygen is already in the air – the plants are making the oxygen. So, you can just use renewable electricity to create 80% of the propellant of the rocket. And then for the remaining 20%, you can use the Sabatier process where you actually take CO2 out of the atmosphere and you combine that with water to create CH4 and more O2. And that's in fact what we would do on Mars to generate propellant. So, there is a long-term plan for sustainable generation of propellant for the rockets. I do want to emphasize that. I bet long term, SpaceX is going to be the default choice for overseas cargo deliveries, especially when Starship is proven to work. “Once you achieve full reusability, then it’s simply the cost of access to orbit is just the cost of propellant, because now you can reuse all aspects of the vehicle. The propellant we use for the Starship is liquid oxygen and liquid methane, which is the cheapest propellant you could possibly get. …So the cost of propellant for Starship will be less than the cost of jet aviation fuel, which means that you should be able to actually send cargo to space for less than the cost of cargo of an airplane going on a transoceanic trip.”
