Sean Evans: What’s one thing about the other guy that you appreciate more than you did back then, with the last decade of experience? Jon Bernthal: That’s easy for me. Tom Holland: As a young man in this business, coming up, it’s so important to find people that you can look up to and people you aspire to be like. Renner explains… “That was a great character, and I turned it down. I’m like, “I don’t wanna play a bad guy. I don’t get it.” Initially, when I read it, I’m like, “Maybe I should play the FBI guy, the John Hamm role. Maybe it’s that one. I don’t know…” In the beginning of the process. I’m like, “All right, I’ll go in and I’ll read this thing. I don’t know Boston. I’d never been there.” So I sat down with Ben (Affleck) at the table - and I’m like, “All right, let me just do a New York accent because I can’t do a Boston accent. I don’t know that. I don’t wanna screw this up.” So he stood in the thing and he’s like, “Yeah, it’s great, it’s great.” So I started interviewing him. I just kind of turned it on him, I’m like, “So why do you think you can direct and star in this movie? I mean, look, I love Gone Baby Gone and all. But you were just directing that. Now you’re starring in it, and you’re gonna direct it?” And his answer is the reason why I did the movie. He said he didn’t know. He said, “I don’t know how I’m gonna do it. But what I have done is I’ve asked other friends of mine that are directors and have starred in their own films. I’ve found the pitfalls and the things they were going through.” And look, Ben is one of the smartest guys I know and one of the most charming guys I know. That’s very apparent. Then I met Ben Affleck. What struck me first was how funny he was, but man was he ripped as well. I've never been the type of guy to get involved in any sort of macho one-upmanship, but I admit I was more than a bit intimidated. The guy is huge. I'm puny by comparison. He is much bigger than I expected, this huge presence and vast physicality. "I had to step it up. Given that it’s Ridley Scott Week, I think now is as good of a time as any to revisit The Last Duel. Written by Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon, I think this is one of Scott’s better films in the last 15 years largely because the writing is so strong. That’s without mentioning that the entire cast is also excellent. I really, really enjoy Damon’s performance here. This film is proof that even in his 80s, Ridley still has his fastball.
