Ben Affleck gave a really strong performance in the George Clooney-directed film The Tender Bar. Affleck’s performance is heartfelt & mature. I thought this had an opening for a potential Oscar nomination, but it’s still some of Ben’s best work as an actor. An overall good film.

Michael Clarke Duncan earned an #Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding work in The Green Mile. I never really write about this film- I should change that. This is such a great late ‘90s movie with a vintage Tom Hanks performance. Great, great film.

Billy Crudup is the best part of Jay Kelly & deserves an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. I found this film to be a letdown overall but Crudup- even in limited screen time- shines brightest. He’s an actor I’ve always loved & deserves a seat at this year’s Oscars.

Steve Carrell gave the best performance of his career in Foxcatcher, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Every last individual actor who appears on screen in this film does something impressive, including and especially Carrell. Bennett Miller can really direct.

James Gandolfini gave such a memorable performance in Killing Them Softly. I like this film more than most & Jim is the best part of this movie. In rewatching The Sopranos, it’s so apparent that Gandolfini could do anything as an actor. He’s raw as hell in this film & this scene.

Christian Bale won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his work in The Fighter & while I don’t really love this film, I love this performance. In fact, the entire film is worth watching because of multiple performances from a loaded cast. But Bale is truly at his best here.

The Imitation Game feels like it came out a lifetime ago. This earned Benedict Cumberbatch an Oscar nomination for Best Actor & while I’m not as high on Cumberbatch like some people on this app, I think he’s without flaw in this film. I’m also partial to historical dramas- they interest me in particular. Good film - great performance.

Timothée Chalamet deserved a second-straight Best Actor Oscar nomination for Beautiful Boy. Chalamet is outstanding in this film and brings to life the pain addiction causes. This is a really sophisticated performance for a young actor. I still don’t know why he was snubbed.

Robert De Niro’s best performance came in 1976 in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. I know De Niro already had an Oscar for The Godfather 2, but this is the film that made De Niro a household name & an icon: it elevated Bob from a great actor to a pop culture superstar. Cheers, Bob.

On the 7th anniversary of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, I still think this is Leonardo DiCaprio’s best performance. He lost the Oscar to Joaquin Phoenix for Joker & it’s a decision that’s aged horribly by the Academy. DiCaprio’s comedic range in this film changed my expectations of Leo as an actor. He reached another level with this film, which also happens to be Tarantino’s best.

I still think about Ralph Fiennes’s performance in Conclave. God, he was so good here. I’m not sure if he deserved the Oscar over Brody but this is as good of a performance as I can remember from an actor who’s spent his life on stage or in front of a camera. What a performance.
