Abdul El-Sayed needs to work through what a Jewish state means before he can affirm it. He told a room of Jewish supporters in Michigan last week that he could not answer the question without first unpacking whether Israel is Jewish by faith, by power, or by majority. My grandmother Hela did not need to work through it. She was put on a plane out of Baghdad because in June 1941 a mob killed 180 Jews in two days, and the message to a community that had lived there for 2,600 years was clear. Over the following decade, 850,000 Jews were forced out of Arab and Muslim-majority countries. She did not need a definition of a Jewish state. She needed a door. Israel was the only one that opened. That is what a Jewish state means. You can struggle with the question for as long as you like. My grandmother did not have the time.
