The Vespasianus Titus Tunnel is a 2,000-year-old engineering marvel – a massive tunnel dug through a mountain that was built to divert floodwaters threatening the harbor near the ancient city of Seleuceia Pieria in what is now Türkiye. According to UNESCO; it is one of the most magnificent remains of the Roman period because of its size, well-preserved authenticity, and architectural and engineering features. Titus Tunnel was neither built, nor completed by the Emperor Titus. The construction of this tunnel, began during reign of Vespasianus, the father of Titus, during second half of 1st Century AD. Although work continued during the reign of Titus (79-81 AD), it was only completed during the reign of Antonius Pius in the 2nd Century AD. These dates are known due to several rock-carved inscriptions found in the tunnel. At first tunnel section, the names Vespasianus and Titus can be found. This inscription reads ‘Divus Vespasianus et Divus Titus F.C.’ (‘Divine Vespasianus and Divine Titus caused it to be made’). Thus, it may be possible that the tunnel was jointly built by the two emperors. Another inscription in the downstream channel bears the name Antoninus Pius, indicating that construction was completed during the reign of this emperor. Titus Tunnel is located in modern day Samandag-Cevlik, Turkey. During Roman era, Samandag-Cevlik was known as Seleucia Pieria (Seleucia by the Sea). This ancient city was one of the four cities in the Syrian tetrapolis, the other three being Antioch by the Orontes, Apamea and Laodicea in Syria. Seleucia Pieria was once an important Roman port city, in which exotic goods from the East were exported to Rome. Perhaps the port’s most well-known ‘exports’ were St. Paul and St. Barnabas, as they were recorded to have sailed from this port on their first missionary journeys. This city, however, had a major problem, as it was constantly threatened by floodwater that came from the nearby mountains. As these waters from mountains carried silt and mud as they descended, harbor was inevitably silted up and became inoperative. Although canals were ordered to be built by previous emperors, they were to no avail, as the floods continued. In order to solve this problem once and for all, Vespasian decided to build a tunnel by digging through the mountain to divert the floodwaters. This diversion system was built on the principle of closing the front of the stream bed with a deflection cover and transferring the waters through an artificial canal and tunnel. Titus Tunnel was designed by engineers of Tenth legion Fratensis and built by Roman legionaries, sailors, and prisoners. Flavius Josephus, a Jewish historian, wrote that one of the canals in the region was built by Jewish slaves captured during the Jewish War (66-73 AD). Unsurprisingly, some have identified that canal with the Titus Tunnel. When completed, the Titus Tunnel spanned a distance of 1.4 km (0.86 mi). As the whole tunnel was carved through solid rock, this was a remarkable feat of Roman engineering, especially when one considers the relatively short amount of time required for its completion. Phase II/CP30/TU-01/ – TBM Kolli (S 81) Breakthrough at Otteri shaft ​Chennai Metro Rail Limited has commenced the expansion of the Chennai city’s metro rail network as part of Phase II after the successful completion of the Phase I and Phase I Extension. CMRL has ventured into an extensive infrastructure development in the city comprising of three more corridors of metro rail for a total length of 116.1 km. ​Corridor 3 comprising a total alignment length of 45.4 km from MadhavaramMilk colony to Siruseri Sipcot will be spanning across the north to south direction of the Chennai city and has a total of 28 underground stations and 19 elevated stations. ​Corridor 4 is an east west alignment for a length of 26.1 km connecting the beach front from Light House station to the Depot at Poonamallee has 9 underground stations and 18 elevated stations. ​Corridor 5 also begins at Madhavaram Milk colony and connects through Koyambedu, Porur, Alandur and other residential/commercial development of the city to Shollinganallur for a total length of 44.6 km with 6 underground stations and 39 elevated stations. ​The tunnel construction for the first 9 km underground section of Corridor 3 from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Kellys is being executed through M/s Tata Projects limited and mobilized 7 TBMs for the tunnelling works. ​The TBM Kolli (S 81) tunnel drive started on 11.07.2023 from AyanavaramStation to Otteri station (Up line), covered a bored tunnel length of 903 m and break-through done at Otteri shaft on 29.08.2024. This is the 6th TBM breakthrough carried out by M/s Tata Projects Limited under TU-01 contract. As a whole, CMRL has completed 7 TBM breakthroughs in phase-2 project. ​The tunnel section between Ayanavaram and Otteri is the most complex tunnel section under the contract TU-01 with major challenges, such as the TBM S 81 (Kolli) first 500m tunnel drive negotiated with sharp 220m radius curve and the last 200m tunnel drive with 280m radius curves. Also, this tunnel drive completed with major challenges such as passing through densely populated areas and addressing more than 100 No. of bore wells along the alignment by providing alternate sources without any issue to the public. ​The complete tunnel drive was well managed within the allowable minimum settlements and extensive instrumentation and monitoring was ensured throughout the drive. ​Thiru T. More than a hundred years ago, San Francisco built a city out of jewels and then tore almost all of it down on purpose. You are looking at the Panama–Pacific International Exposition of 1915. For ten months, on six hundred acres along the city's northern waterfront, San Francisco raised an entire fantasy metropolis of palaces, colonnades, fountains, and towers, and invited the world to walk through it. Nearly nineteen million people did. What makes it almost unbelievable is the timing. Only nine years earlier, in 1906, San Francisco had been flattened by one of the worst earthquakes and fires in American history. Much of the city had burned to the ground. The exposition was the city's answer to the world: not only have we survived, we can build something more beautiful than anything you have ever seen. At its heart stood the Tower of Jewels, 435 feet of triumphal arch and tower rising over the fairgrounds. Its surface was hung with more than 100,000 small cut-glass "jewels," each dangling on a tiny hook so it would tremble in the wind. By day they flashed in the sunlight. At night, more than fifty spotlights were turned on them, and the entire tower shimmered above the bay like something out of a dream. People had never seen anything like it... Around it spread a city of wonders. The Palace of Fine Arts, a vast Roman ruin reflected in its own still lagoon, designed to evoke the beautiful melancholy of a vanished civilization. The Palace of Machinery, so enormous that an airplane was once flown inside it. Grand courts and avenues lined with sculpture, all built in a soft, unified palette of color, glowing under the new technology of indirect electric light. And nearly all of it was designed to disappear. When it closed in December 1915, the dream city was systematically pulled down. Only one structure was saved. The Palace of Fine Arts, the most beloved of them all, was considered too beautiful to lose. Decades later it was rebuilt, and it still stands in San Francisco today, the last survivor of an entire city that existed for less than a year... Perhaps that’s what haunts us most: not that we built temporary palaces, but that we chose not to keep them. We built beauty knowing we would destroy it, as if beauty itself were disposable. Roger Scruton once said: "There is a deep human need for beauty, and if you ignore that need in architecture, your buildings will not last, since people will never feel at home in them." I meet you on the first Friday of the year not in Jama Masjid, as the Mirwaiz should, but on social media, as I have once again been put under arrest! As another year begins and we look forward to it, painful memories of 2025 stay with us. It was a year marked by tragedy and uncertainty. The horrific Pahalgam attack shook us deeply. Unequivocally condemned by one and all in the valley, it led to a lot of anxiety among the people as they were targeted and homes demolished. This was followed by another India–Pakistan war, and a stark reminder of how fragile peace in the region continues to be. Despite making unilateral changes in 2019, the reality is that the Kashmir conflict continues to keep the region in an unsettled state that can erupt anytime. That is why wars are paused, not ended, and dialogue finds no takers. The year-end witnessed another tragedy — the massive blast and loss of life in New Delhi. Yet beyond these incidents, in which Kashmiris find themselves at the receiving end of suspicion and attacks in parts of India, not much has changed for them. The trust deficit between them and New Delhi has widened, not shrunk. Enforced silence is projected as acquiescence. Wounds remain open, problems unaddressed, and an elected government of a UT complains of being powerless. A sense of hopelessness prevails, along with an existential crisis of losing one’s identity through demographic change since the state was downgraded to a Union Territory, constitutional guarantees withdrawn, and rules and laws tweaked. The year also witnessed the banning of the Awami Action Committee — a socio-political institution that reached out to people in need, advocating peace, dialogue and resolution — along with Ittihadul Muslimeen, which were part of the Hurriyat Conference. Much of that space has now been extinguished. Today we are operating in an environment where any expression of views contrary to the state, or any disagreement, is increasingly criminalised, branded as “anti-national” and penalised. No public space is available to us, and mediums of communication, including most local media, are not ready to provide any space for voicing expressions of people’s demands or views. I do not have the privilege of addressing press conferences. I cannot move without getting official clearance, and people cannot meet me without seeking permission. My access to the pulpit of Jama Masjid — the spiritual heart of Kashmir — is also curtailed. Even last Friday, I was placed under house arrest, and again this Friday too. In fact, last year I was under house arrest for fourteen Fridays. Arbitrary house arrests have become a recurring feature in my life. All this is deeply suffocating — not only for me, but for an entire society that increasingly feels voiceless. So when pressed to make changes to my social media profile — as Hurriyat constituents are banned under UAPA, displaying the title would be considered illegal and the platforms barred to me — I was left with little choice but to safeguard the minimal channel of communication available to me or face the risk of complete silencing, as even today I am addressing you through this channel when I am again put under house arrest. With Hurriyat constituents banned, all offices sealed and institutions closed, leaders and activists either in jails or under constant surveillance, social media remains the only platform that gives some voice and opportunity to connect with people and the outside world. Let me make it clear, my beliefs and convictions have not changed — not even by a comma. Some have criticised this move as a compromise. To them I say, how and for what? They make a strange argument — for being provided security. But it was provided to me since the day of my father’s martyrdom 35 years ago. If I did not compromise for it since then, why should I compromise now?

A sense of hopelessness prevails, along with an existential crisis of losing one’s identity through demographic change since the state was downgraded to a Union Territory, constitutional guarantees withdrawn, and rules and laws tweaked. The year also witnessed the banning of the Awami Action Committee — a socio-political institution that reached out to people in need, advocating peace, dialogue and resolution — along with Ittihadul Muslimeen, which were part of the Hurriyat Conference. Much of that space has now been extinguished. Today we are operating in an environment where any expression of views contrary to the state, or any disagreement, is increasingly criminalised, branded as “anti-national” and penalised. No public space is available to us, and mediums of communication, including most local media, are not ready to provide any space for voicing expressions of people’s demands or views. I do not have the privilege of addressing press conferences. I cannot move without getting official clearance, and people cannot meet me without seeking permission. My access to the pulpit of Jama Masjid — the spiritual heart of Kashmir — is also curtailed. Even last Friday, I was placed under house arrest, and again this Friday too. In fact, last year I was under house arrest for fourteen Fridays. Arbitrary house arrests have become a recurring feature in my life. All this is deeply suffocating — not only for me, but for an entire society that increasingly feels voiceless. So when pressed to make changes to my social media profile — as Hurriyat constituents are banned under UAPA, displaying the title would be considered illegal and the platforms barred to me — I was left with little choice but to safeguard the minimal channel of communication available to me or face the risk of complete silencing, as even today I am addressing you through this channel when I am again put under house arrest. With Hurriyat constituents banned, all offices sealed and institutions closed, leaders and activists either in jails or under constant surveillance, social media remains the only platform that gives some voice and opportunity to connect with people and the outside world. Let me make it clear, my beliefs and convictions have not changed — not even by a comma. Some have criticised this move as a compromise. To them I say, how and for what? They make a strange argument — for being provided security. But it was provided to me since the day of my father’s martyrdom 35 years ago. If I did not compromise for it since then, why should I compromise now?

When it comes to Unions, Labor has a massive conflict, it's destroying Australia and nobody talks about it. Unions once helped people. They allowed the littlest of us a voice. Those that did small and thankless work in a more dangerous environment. They rose when the big end of town could treat the working people as slaves. Just machines. Pay was abysmal, and working conditions - cruel. People were just filthy pawns. The industrial era was brutal. The Unions gave workers the ability to be heard and understood. A much needed voice. Many of the great things about this country came from the high-risk and low-reward strike action early last century. Unions in Australia have many proud achievements back then. Built on a collection of little actions that won things like living wages, weekends (although that was Henry Ford) and holidays. But like so many old institutions, they have completely lost their way today. Modern Unions are different. Unions actively encouraged the big end of town as they smashed workers during the COVID era. Forced masking and vaccination, exposure of private medical data and other breaches of human rights - endorsed by the Unions. Whilst those of us who were privileged enough to make our own decisions, so many working people were pummelled, simply for not having the means to speak up. Because Unions abandoned them. There are many stories of workers completely abandoned by their unions when it mattered over the decades. They're rarely led by the workers, who care about their mates - a care borne from a deep understanding of their colleagues. Now they are run by careerists, lawyers and sociologists all too familiar with the lecture halls and university picket lines. People who've never swung a hammer, picked a banana, served a beer, flown a plane or taught a class. Those on the pathway to parliament, or the board of a superfund to worry about the little people. Their purpose is completely perverted. Unions are the Labor governments and Labor governments are the Unions. Just a giant and very powerful parasite that has exactly no stakes in the outcomes they cause. As jobs disappear. The Unions sent the car industry packing. Forcing business into unsustainable pay and conditions. It was easier for them to close shop, unless the government propped-up the grift, with our taxes. Taxes are the lifeblood of Unions as more and more subsidy fuels industries that the Unions break. All of it inflationary. Pay never keeps up. They’re driving us off a cliff. They talk tough in the boardroom, and build more bureaucracy in the name of safety or productivity. Hollowing out productivity and the living standards of their own membership. Their membership is in decline. Because anyone who ever called on their union from a place of need knows - they don't answer the phones during Question Time. They give us MPs that never had a real job, like Walker and Shorten, advocating for things that make workers lives worse. High immigration, political correctness, and every social cause going. They insist on destroying our energy grid, and more jobs go... Then there's the money go round of political donations and brown paper bags. Just look at the criminal CFMEU. They've go too far - the Unions and Labor put paid drivers on driver-less trains in NSW. Gorging themselves on taxpayer dollars. Meanwhile real wage and productivity falls, as living standards in Australia sink like an anchor looking for the ocean floor. Labor in government don’t regulate Unions, they aid and abet them. Together they have completely lost their purpose, as they ruin themselves and their legacy.
