Disrespecting Marathi for the sake of vote banks… this won’t work… This is for their own good… Knowing the language of the locals will only help the drivers themselves.”

From 1 May, Maharashtra is applying a rule of knowing basic Marathi on Auto and Taxi drivers in state. They will go to a registration centre to read, write, and speak Marathi. I support it. While some might feel this is outrageous and unions are deciding to protest, it is not really a high expectation. I don’t understand how you never tried to learn the language while working in Maharashtra for decades. Most signboards are in Marathi, you meet Marathi speaking people daily, you just catch the language naturally. You have to be stubborn to not to use it. While I support this language requirement for auto & taxi drivers, I would also like to see it applied in corporate & other jobs as they are the ones who are most ignorant for the language. Just add some more days for learning how to write. Marathis love the literature. Most people I know have read some poet or some writer. Many of them love to write on their own. The language sentiment comes from this love for literature. They cannot see it perish and we must respect it. Jai Maharashtra!

The assault on an elderly Marathi man by an Ola driver in Thane has turned political. While the two Shiv Sena factions united to track down the driver and thrash him, now the MNS has jumped in and is targeting Ola drivers across Thane. MNS workers were seen stopping taxi drivers, checking their Marathi fluency and beating those who could not speak the local language. MNS leader Avinash Jadhav landed the site of assault and was seen harassing the Ola drivers over the Marathi language issue. MNS leader was also seen slapping cab drivers who could not speak Marathi. The issue has taken a local vs outsider turn as the victim is a Marathi while the taxi driver who beat him is non-Marathi. A video of the Ola cab driver assaulting the old man in full public view had gone viral on social media on Wednesday. The incident took place outside a popular mall when the old man reportedly objected to the taxi driver spitting on the road. An argument followed, and the enraged taxi driver was seen beating the old man while his wife tried to save him. Taxi driver was seen hitting the man with a stone, who fell down on the road and sustained injuries. As Soon as the video circulated on social media, Shiv Sena workers traced the driver, thrashed him and handed him over to the police. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde himself took cognizance of the assault on the elderly man. He released a video directing the Thane Commissioner to book the cab driver for attempt to murder. "If a person is brutally assaulted merely for pointing out that someone is littering, it will not be accepted at any cost," Shinde said. Thane is the stronghold of Eknath Shinde. Following the deputy chief minister's directive, Vartak Nagar Police arrested the accused Ola driver and booked him for attempt to murder.

When nobody knew what #NEP was, this lady (who happens to be an extremely close relative of mine), knew how to navigate languages. She is a purest of pure Kannadathi married into a Kannadiga house who spoke Marathi. This Kannadiga household gave up their mother tongue #Kannada for #Marathi in 1950s when they migrated from Dharwad to Nashik. This family of mine has books in Kannada and is trying to pass on Kannada to future generations. Though they converted into a Marathi household, they have retained Kannada flair. And while doing it, there is no semblance of animosity towards either Marathi or Kannada. Look how beautifully she switches between both languages. Proud to call her my relative. According to her, I am continuing the legacy of Marathi-Kannada unison in today’s day and age as I try to learn Kannada. We don’t need NEP and it’s mandatory language policy to be multilingual. We are Marathis. We are Kannadigas. And we have been multilingual for centuries. Was privileged to record these videos today.
