🚨 FLASH! Devendra Fadnavis makes it clear that Marathi will definitely get priority in Maharashtra, but No DISCRIMINATION to others💥 🗣️ “We only asked taxi and auto drivers to learn functional Marathi. > It was just a two-page syllabus, basic phrases like ‘Come and sit’ & ‘Where do you want to go.’ No compulsion, no licence cancellations. Hindi-speaking taxi and auto unions themselves met me and said they want to learn Marathi, but need time. We told them: Take all the time you need.”

🚨 Fadnavis shuts down the Marathi “hate” narrative > Hindi-speaking auto & taxi drivers are NOT being asked to become Marathi experts. The requirement is simple: learn basic Marathi needed to communicate with passengers. No “strict compulsion” on fleuncy. And when drivers asked for more time, the government extended the deadline TWICE. The CM’s message cuts through the noise: learn enough to do your job, not to prove your identity.

VIDEO | Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis says, "First of all, there is no reason for our Hindi-speaking brothers who work as taxi or auto drivers here to become experts in Marathi. They only need to know enough Marathi to carry out their work, and that is what has been requested. There is no compulsion of any kind; efforts are being made to teach them Marathi. People have already requested an extension twice, and the deadline was extended. It has now been extended for a third time as well. If there is another request from those who want to learn and need more time, the deadline will be extended again. Our Mahayuti government will not allow anyone to be treated unfairly on the basis of language..."

They first expressed their support for the idea that functional Marathi should be learned by those working in Mumbai. They all want to learn it, but along with that, they also said that people of various ages are in this profession, and many have dropped out of studies a long time ago. Because of this, learning Marathi in such a short time is difficult for them. They have prepared a very comprehensive plan to teach functional Marathi. They have demanded that they be given one year for this task. The state government has accepted their point and is giving them one year. No action will be taken against them for one year..."

#WATCH | Mumbai: On the mandatory requirement for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers in Maharashtra to communicate in the Marathi language, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale says, "The Transport Minister has taken such a stance that rickshaw and auto-rickshaw drivers living in Mumbai should know Marathi... Those whose mother tongue is not Marathi should learn Marathi, and the government has also given time for this... There should be no controversy in the name of language. Baba Saheb Ambedkar's Constitution tells us that every language, every religion, and every caste should be respected. Mumbai is the economic capital of our country, where 60% of the people are non-Marathi. This is a good decision in the direction of increasing the number of Marathi-speaking people... Some people create controversy over language, and we oppose this stance, but in the matter of learning the Marathi language, our party supports it."

From 1 May, Maharashtra is applying a rule of knowing basic Marathi on Auto and Taxi drivers in state. They will go to a registration centre to read, write, and speak Marathi. I support it. While some might feel this is outrageous and unions are deciding to protest, it is not really a high expectation. I don’t understand how you never tried to learn the language while working in Maharashtra for decades. Most signboards are in Marathi, you meet Marathi speaking people daily, you just catch the language naturally. You have to be stubborn to not to use it. While I support this language requirement for auto & taxi drivers, I would also like to see it applied in corporate & other jobs as they are the ones who are most ignorant for the language. Just add some more days for learning how to write. Marathis love the literature. Most people I know have read some poet or some writer. Many of them love to write on their own. The language sentiment comes from this love for literature. They cannot see it perish and we must respect it. Jai Maharashtra!
