Sometimes, a coach loses a game, much less a regional final, and they're ready to hit the showers, hit the road, and not talk much. It was refreshing to see Louisiana's Head Coach Matt Deggs, who'd just lost 19-5 to Mississippi State, after playing in mid 90s temps earlier in the afternoon just to get the opportunity, willing to talk about the game, his team, and even his expectations for next year. If you're fans of Mississippi State and its Head Coach Brian O' Connor, he will remind you of the same candor, plain-spoken-but-well-spoken type of coach who has both affection for his players but expectations of what he asks and demands of them. This is a coach whose team survived multiple elimination games at the Sun Belt tournament, played at all hours and even multiple locations last week, winding up in the championship game. And when offered a chance to deflect the lopsided score with the drain his team might have faced having only a short while after gutting out a win over 2-seed Cincinnati 8-6, he said his team wasn't tired, though. They just ran out of pitching. And, his analogy that "they were going to have to kill us, and they did" was a tip of the cap to his opponent, whom he deemed worthy of a long run in Omaha. Anyway, let's let Coach Deggs say that, and so much more, in his own words. Write it down now, they look like a team to watch in the Sun Belt for 2027. And, since this was the last game of the Starkville Regional, we'll remind you again the video is courtesy of NCAA Baseball and Mississippi State Baseball, with additional editing by College Baseball Central.

In a Division V Regional Final, #10 (D5) LB Eagle Baseball (22-5) punched its 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓-𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 trip to the State Final Four, defeating ACHS Aces Baseball (14-13) by a 6-1 score and outhitting the Aces 10-2. 2028 RHP/C Kooper Leatherman was dominant from start to finish, keeping Amanda-Clearcreek off balance all evening. The talented two-way tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on two hits and three walks while striking out six. The Eagles' offense backed him with 10 hits, led by a trio of multi-hit performances. 2026 OF Reid Irwin paced the attack with three hits, while 2027 OF Connor Barbara and 2028 INF Taden Troyer each collected two hits. For the Aces, 2026 CF/RHP Gary did everything he could to keep his team within striking distance. The two-way standout entered in relief and delivered five strong innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) while striking out four. At the plate, he accounted for Amanda-Clearcreek's biggest swing of the night, finishing 1-for-2 with a home run, walk, RBI, and run scored. LibertyBentonHS now heads to the state tournament for the first time in program history, where it will face Columbus Academy Baseball (16-16) on June 11 at 10 a.m. The opposite side of the Division V bracket features #1 Waynedale Baseball (29-3) and #7 VHS_Baseball (22-6). Congrats to Ryan Ward for having his contract selected and being placed on the Dodgers' 40 Man Roster. Wardo was awarded as the Most Valuable Player in the PCL this past season after hitting .290, with an OPS of .937. He posted a WRC+ of 132, and his 36 home runs led ALL of the Minor Leagues During this season he also became the ALL-TIME home runs leader (90) and RBIs (318) in the history of the Bricktown Ballpark Era for OKC baseball. On a personal note, I've been going to AAA OKC games since 1975. That dates back to All-Sports stadium, and 6 different affiliation changes, 5 of which have been in my lifetime, and that I remember VERY well. So, to see this with my own eyes was truly historical on a personal level for me as well. #89ERS And, to have it happen in the first year of the new branding was a real "page turner" of OKC baseball, so that's SUPER cool too. Ward also drove in 122 runs, which is the most of ANY player in the PCL since 2010, and racked up the most total bases (315) of any player in the PCL since 2001. Ward also set single-season records for the Bricktown era in hits (164), runs (113), and RBIs (122). As per his defense... His outfield play has gotten better and better as each year has passed, and, while his bat will likely always be the"show stealer", he is a good athlete and has become a very solid outfielder. He can also play 1st base, and dabbled in a touch of 2nd base while at Bryant Baseball Speaking of Bryant, he's the only Bulldog ever to hit over .400 for a single season, and he struck out just 1 time his senior Season at Millbury, so the "hit tool" is NOT a new thing for him. As an aside, he graduated with fewer than 100 kids in his High School, and he is not shy to show pride in his "small town" work ethic. With all the home runs over the fence, his highlight of last year was an at-bat where he kept the ball IN the park. Wardo knocked an INSIDE-the-park WALKOFF home run back at the beginning of May. Congrats, Wardo, I could type ALL DAY about this dude, but that will do it for NOW. #dodgers
