People will just migrate to other jobs. How many times do we have to see this play out? Computers decimated the ranks of office secretaries, and other jobs. Did it cause massive unemployment? Combines another farm equipment decimated the need for farm workers, which is what most people were employed as in the 19th century. Did that spike unemployment? There are 100 other examples. Everybody needs to calm down and relax. Just enjoy the benefits of massive technological advancement.

Even the tech bros will not explain this in a well-planned thought out way. Because the reality is they have no intention of paying anybody. And a country that's 40 trillion in debt because they send all their money to every other country except their people to generate it are not going to pay you to do nothing. They would sooner in prison you or line you up against the wall and shoot you in the back of the head then do that.

I never liked Bill Maher's politics. You have to admit though ...he hits the nail square on the head with a lot of what he says.

A lot of those losing jobs are already freeloading as govt employees.

The truth is sinister tbh, they will talk about giving people free money but once ai replaces the core workforce, It will be far cheaper to genocide 65% of the population to save recorces. They just need the plebs to behave while they establish the infrastructure.

There is one and only one solution - wealth redistribution. Give away over 80% of stock of AI and all other industries to the citizens to make everyone a financially independent capitalist living off one's portfolio. Because only your money will make you money when all jobs are being done by AI. Let us call it Universal Basic Investment.

Totally overblown - like saying computers are going to take everyone's jobs. Some jobs will be eliminated, absolutely, while many more jobs and industries we can barely even imagine will be opened up.

Sadly, the people responsible for layoffs and employment don’t understand how or what AI is good for. It’s for making your already employed people better, it’s not for replacing them. Let’s take an Applications Engineer (AE). He used to have to consult with two to three other engineers, who had to leave projects they were working on to consult for a single quote. Now that AE can do all of the research on his own. Those other engineers can keep working their projects. Instead of 1 day for a quote, now he can get a quote in 1 hour with more accuracy. Take the electrical engineer. Instead of 80 hours and three meetings for a block diagram now he can do it in 8 hours and a couple of text messages. It does not replace people, it makes people better.

Maher is correct. UBI cannot be paid by taxpyers. Any form of this enhanced social contribution depends on technology, robotic, AI to bring costs exponentially down. Without an entrepreneurial society no UBI. Not redistribution (eat the billionaires) but capitalism as solution.

The AI companies and physical datacenter companies have to fund it, obviously. Who fucking said WE are funding billionaires’ theft of American prosperity?

this is what I don't get about our world tho, like I get that the neoliberal system works this way, but why we let it work this way. The only value we have is working? For 200k years we increase tech, automate things, only for the economy to be more hollowed out and life harder?

We need economists to spell out exactly where the money comes from to pay for UBI if most the people are not paying taxes. How does supply and demand work if the demand side hasn’t money? What economic system does it then become?

Its never been easier to start your own business with the opportunities of a.i. A talented normal person with hopes and dreams can now utilize a.i. instead of hiring 5 salaries to do one job you can accomplish yourself. If you were smart enough to go to school but not smart enough to use a.i. for something greater than yourself I feel bad for you.

It’s straight fear porn. It’s like climate change. People speculating without any real history data. Pure linear speculation. It’s ridiculousness. All of it. AI is artificial, but it clearly isn’t intelligent. Everybody calm down. AI is math, computers and data. Period.

It’s not like the money disappeared. It still exists as taxable income earned by a corporation. Tax the companies who increase their margins with AI to cover UBI.

AI is a menace. It will be used to replace human labor so that products can be made more cheaply… but an unemployed population can’t afford to buy anything. We’re going to eliminate millions of jobs, which arent just a source of income. They’re also a source of pride and dignity. All the smartest people in the world are leading us down the path of destruction. For what?
