All doc is here, (thanks YT again). It's a really good and exciting one. Interviewer Michel Ciment was an eminent and respected film critic and writer in France.

Reminds me of Dorothy Parker and Alan Campbell. Parker would sit there legs up on desk smoking a cigarette and Campbell would be at the typewriter. Parker effortlessly turned out one top line after another.

Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine in a scene from The Apartment (1960), directed by Billy Wilder. • For this film, Billy Wilder became the first person to win the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. • Jack Lemmon said he learned much about filmmaking from Billy Wilder, particularly the director's use of “hooks”, bits of business the audience remembers long after they've forgotten other aspects of the movie. One such hook was the passing of the key to Baxter's apartment. Lemmon said for years after the picture's release, people would come up to him and say, “Hey, Jack, can I have the key?”. • Billy Wilder originally thought of the idea for the film after seeing Brief Encounter (1945) and wondering about the plight of a character unseen in that film ― the person who lends his apartment for an extramarital tryst. Shirley MacLaine was only given forty pages of the script because Wilder didn't want her to know how the story would turn out. She thought it was because the script wasn't finished.

I want to be in my office and think. And number three, it’s very exciting. I like to tell stories. Ultimately it’s interesting. You meet nice people, it’s glamorous, and, if you get lucky, very profitable. You suffer a great deal, but to paraphrase President Truman, if you can’t take all that crap, get out of the studio. Believe me, this is not a profession for a dignified human being. I can see the interest in pictures when I talk to you students, especially now that almost every university has something connected with movies. But if I had a son I would beat him with a very large whip trying to make a gardener, a dentist or something else out of him. Don’t do it. It’s just too tough. It hurts, and the moments of glory are very far between. Well, it’s too late for me to turn back, too late for me to become a gardener. I can’t bend over the azaleas. Not anymore."
