The Vatican announced Thursday that six bishops associated with the ultra-conservative Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) have been excommunicated following the unauthorized consecration of four new bishops the previous day in Écône, Switzerland. The consecrations were carried out without the approval of Pope Leo XIV. Under Catholic canon law, only the pope can authorize the consecration of new bishops. CBS News' Chris Livesay explains.

Pope St. John Paul II: "The particular circumstances, although grave, in no way justify a bishop assuming the office of ordaining bishops on his own initiative and without the pontifical mandate, for this is an act of schism." Canon 1013: "No bishop is permitted to consecrate anyone a bishop unless it is first evident that there is a pontifical mandate." Canon 1387: "Both the Bishop who, without a pontifical mandate, consecrates a person a Bishop, and the one who receives the consecration from him, incur a latae sententiae excommunication reserved to the Apostolic See." Fr. Palko's words confirm that the SSPX will continue doing what it wishes, regardless of the authority or jurisdiction of the pope. Textbook schism.

I will continue to post videos of all TLM communities, in particular the SSPX, as they are in desperate need of our support but, most importantly, our prayers. There are reports that the Vatican is considering making all faithful who attend SSPX chapels, as schismatics along with the clergy and seminarians. I hope it is not true. I hope the Holy See is touched with the mercy that they beg others to have for migrants, homosexuals, Muslims, jews, and enemies of the church. Pray ceaselessly. Blessed be God forever.

Rome had warned that the move would constitute a schismatic act and trigger automatic excommunications under canon law, echoing Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre’s 1988 break with John Paul II. Again, if you know a trad priest who thinks the SSPX faithful have been excommunicated, please share this clip from canon lawyer, Father Gerald Murray who, though NOT SSPX, has called the Vatican's declaration a "canonical mess!" Father Murray could not be clearer: "The SSPX faithful and priests are not – ACCORDING TO THE VATICAN DECREE -- excommunicated." It is, therefore, a gross violation of Christian charity to suggest that they are and to require of them some sort of formal declaration of faith before they can “reenter the Church.” The Revolution already has plenty of useful idiotic water carriers without traditional Catholic priests volunteering to drive the water truck. Ripperger says, "one time I actually had a private meeting with Bishop Fellay [SSPX Superior General 1994-2018] and I think he's a good man, he's an earnest man, and I think he's trying to do what he thinks is best for the Church." "If I were the Pope, the first thing I would do is I would call the head of the SSPX and say, 'You're to be in my office at 8:00 in the morning. And what I would do is, when he showed up I would write it out myself: 'You're canonical regularized. Here, go home and we'll figure out the rest later.' Just have it over with." Source:
