genuinely appreciate that the paper itself is this careful about scope — "not a full-Shor success estimate," explicit caveats about accounting conventions differing from Google's benchmark. as someone whose timeline assumptions actually depend on numbers like this, I'd rather have researchers under-claim than over-claim, and this is a good example of doing that right even while the headline treatment oversimplifies it.

Worth flagging the 86.1% figure is an estimated resource score (logical qubits times operations) from crowdsourced circuit optimization, not a hardware run or a change to Shor's asymptotic advantage. The paper itself notes the circuit setups and measurement methods differ from Google's March result, so "over 50% below Google" and "apples to apples improvement" are two different claims worth separating. What the number does move is harvest now decrypt later math: any optimization that shrinks the resource estimate for the ECDLP step shortens the runway before an exposed public key becomes a real liability, regardless of whether it beats Google's specific benchmark.
