Bizarre, random 90s at bat: John Candelaria vs Fred McGriff (October 1, 1991).

Davey Johnson did this with McDowell and Orosco in 1986, 5 years before this game #Mets

Indeed

The pre-DH NL was the best. I was at a game as a kid in Wrigley when the Reds did this and once my Dad explained to me what happened I thought it was the coolest thing ever!

As Braves fan who watch all McGriff Atlanta era I don’t recall seeing him try a bunt or having an at bat so sloppy, he looked defeat entering the batters box before any pitch.

I was shocked by this at bat.

It’s him! The second spitter!

This is better than the Manfred regime by a mile.

The type of strategizing the mlb took from us because they want higher scoring and 2 hour games smh I miss these days

@DoozerDJ Don Mattingly said that his toughest pitcher to face was The Candyman.

Crime Dog!

50th Anniversary of Candy Man’s no-hitter vs. … Dodgers … this summer

I’ve watched baseball my whole life just like any guy and I have never seen this done, I wish more people would do it. Seems logical to me, if a regular mlb pitcher can’t catch a popup in the outfield then they shouldn’t be in the bigs. Useful to do this in my opinion

Pitcher José DeLeón played about 4 innings in the outfield on May 14, 1988. He rotated between left field and right field with Tom Brunansky, depending upon who was batting... Of course, MLB killed extra-inning games because they HATE fun!

The Candy Man vs. Crime Dog

Candelaria had wicked stuff

Eric Gregg with that classic boxer’s punch 🥊 strike call 🙏🏿 Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Sunday! Baseball TONIGHT! 😢 WHEN I WATCHED @espn on The REGULAR #TheWayWeWere ⚾️📺

Whitey Herzog used Todd Worrell in 4 games in right field. I think this move is sort of illegal now with 3-batter minimums, etc. They just make the extra-inning rules worse every year.

I miss this baseball. Strategy!!

When baseball was baseball 🤷🏾♂️

I miss the strategy and double switches of pre-DH NL baseball.

Whitey Herzog was a master at this

Listening to Chris Berman is like nails on a chalkboard

I seriously miss loving baseball the way I did back then. Ohtani is definitely helping bring that back though. RIP Tommy Lasorda.

My youth

Lasorda was the manager for 20 fucking years😂😂 goddamn

This is stunningly bizarre, yet riveting!

Omg I remember watching that game!

Pathetic work by McGriff. My God.

This is why I love baseball ⚾️!!

@SalMarinello Love it. That’s creative.

I doubt we will ever see this again but never say never!

Roger McDowell on the.grassy knoll.

Universal DH sucks

Tommy Lasorda was so intelligent.

The Candyman

The Cubs did this with Travis Wood in 2016. Wood could field and hit.
